Remember Huey?
While all of his dachshund friends seem to be collecting forever homes like they're handing them out at Costco, Huey is still waiting for someone to choose him.

Yes, he's not a dachshund. Yes, he's about 45 pounds. And yes, we're pretty sure he missed the memo that he was supposed to be a small dog.

Huey is a whole lot of fun wrapped up in one handsome package. He loves to run and play in the yard, knows several commands, enjoys being with his people, and has enough personality to keep you entertained for years to come. He's smart, affectionate, and ready to trade rescue life for a couch, a family, and a place to finally call his own.

At 45 pounds, he's basically a dachshund that got stretched in every direction.

Huey has been patiently waiting for his happily ever after. Let's help him find the family that's been missing out on him all this time.

We've been keeping this one under wraps for a while as we've worked to get her healthy enough to share her story.

At the end of April, a shelter reached out to us about a heartbreaking case. This little girl had been surviving on her own for quite some time before she was finally brought to safety. When she was rescued, she was severely underweight, malnourished, dehydrated, and absolutely loaded with parasites. The shelter staff described her as "the skinniest dog who can still stand" that they had ever taken in.
On May 1, Hannah weighed just 9.1 pounds. She was suffering from severe dehydration, bloody diarrhea, a massive parasite burden, and skin issues. At one point, rescuers noted six episodes of bloody stool in a single night. Despite everything she had endured, she never gave up.

Over the last six weeks, Hannah Banana has slowly but surely transformed back into the happy go lucky pup she was always meant to be. At her most recent vet visit on June 3, she weighed 12.6 pounds. A gain of 3.5 pounds in just over a month!

While she has made incredible progress, we're not completely out of the woods yet. Her platelet count remains dangerously low, and we're still searching for answers. We don't know what long-term damage may have been done during the time she was struggling on her own, but we do know this.
❤️Love matters.
🧆Good nutrition matters.
🏥Medical care matters.
☝️And second chances matter.

Hannah didn't give up, and neither will we. While she's made incredible progress, we still have many unanswered questions and likely more veterinary visits ahead. Apparently while we were busy doing rescue things, Eleven dachshunds quietly executed their own exit strategy.

While we've been busy with vet visits, transports, foster updates, and everything else rescue throws our way, a whole bunch of pups quietly snuck off to their forever homes.

Congratulations to Gracie, Heckite, Arlo and Tahoe, Mr. Riley, Gypsy, Olive, Riley, Avalon, Maverick, and Bailey(not pictured)!

That's 11 dogs who traded foster homes for forever couches, temporary families for permanent ones, and uncertainty for a lifetime of love.

We're a little behind on sharing their Happy Tails, but trust us, we're never behind on celebrating them. Every adoption opens a spot for another dog in need, and because of our amazing fosters, adopters, volunteers, and supporters, these pups got the happy ending they deserved.

Now if you'll excuse us, we're busy turning those 11 empty spots into 11 new rescue stories.

☔️When it rains, it pours, and right now, it's raining dogs at Tennessee Dachshund Rescue.☔

In the last week and a half alone, Tennessee Dachshund Rescue has taken in 15 dogs.
Fifteen dogs who need veterinary care. Fifteen dogs who need food, medications, supplies, and most importantly, safe places to land while they wait for their forever homes.

Rescue never stops, and right now we could use your help.

Whether it's making a donation toward veterinary expenses, opening your home as a foster, or simply sharing our posts, every little bit makes a difference.

And it's not just our rescue feeling the strain. Rescues across Tennessee and throughout the country are overwhelmed with dogs needing help. Every share helps spread awareness. Lately, we've seen a number of comments from people who are quick to judge the decisions we make as a rescue. The reality is that every medical, behavioral, and placement decision is made based on veterinary recommendations, professional guidance, and what is in the best interest of the dog—not public opinion.

What many people don't see is that rescue work is not simply posting cute photos and finding homes. Running a nonprofit rescue requires balancing medical care, finances, foster availability, volunteer capacity, legal obligations, and the needs of hundreds of dogs over time. Every decision has consequences, and we take that responsibility seriously.

It's also worth noting that many of the individuals who are the most critical often do not have active foster or adoption applications with us, are not volunteering, and are not directly involved in the day-to-day work of rescue. We welcome questions, respectful conversations, and differing viewpoints. If you believe we have made an error regarding your application or situation, please send us an email so we can review it and respond appropriately. Social media is not the place to address individual application concerns. What doesn't help is hostility, assumptions, or personal attacks directed at the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to saving lives.

Our team is not perfect, but we are committed to making decisions based on expert advice and the resources available to us. If you truly want to help, consider fostering, volunteering, donating, transporting, or adopting. Those actions save dogs. Negative comments on social media do not.

We'll continue focusing our energy where it belongs: helping dachshunds in need.

💔 A Message We Never Wanted to Write 💔

It is with a heavy heart that we share that Tennessee Dachshund Rescue is facing a reality we have never faced in our 10 years of rescue.

For a decade, we have been blessed to say “yes” to dachshunds in need. No matter the circumstance, we have found a way. But today, we are down to only a handful of active foster homes, and without additional fosters, we will be forced to close intake and potentially face decisions about the future of our rescue.

The truth is simple: rescue doesn’t happen without foster homes.

Every dog that comes into TDR needs a safe place to land while receiving medical care, learning to trust, and waiting for their forever family. We can cover the veterinary care, supplies, and support, but we cannot provide the one thing we desperately need most…a home.

We’ve made countless posts, sent pleas, and shared urgent requests, but foster numbers continue to decline. Meanwhile, the need for rescue has never been greater.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, now is the time.

🐾 You provide a safe, loving temporary home.
🐾 Foster homes must be located in Tennessee.
🐾 Resident pets must be spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, and on heartworm prevention.

Meet Oddy
Oddy is 2 years old, weighs around 15 pounds, and came to us from a hoarding situation. Because of his past, he’s still very skittish and learning that the world can be a safe and loving place.
But little by little, this sweet boy is coming out of his shell.

In the mornings, if the other pups jump into bed, Oddy will follow along and curl up beside you for pets. He’ll hop up next to your chair asking for attention, happily come running for blueberries and carrots, and recently even allowed his foster to pick him up for a brief moment , a huge milestone for a pup still learning to trust.

Oddy absolutely LOVES other dogs. Big dogs, little dogs, it doesn’t matter. He wants to play all day and snuggle up with his furry friends at night. Because of this, he’ll need another confident dog in the home to help him continue building confidence.

What Oddy needs most is patience, understanding, and someone willing to let him move at his own pace. The reward? Watching a dog who has never truly known security slowly learn what love feels like.

And honestly, there’s something incredibly special about being the person a dog finally learns to trust.
