Meet Max. Two weeks ago, he was hesitant and unsure. Today? He's navigating farmers markets, greeting strangers, playing with other dogs-and crashing happily in the car afterward.

We almost let the day get away from us without saying it…

🐾HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY! 🐾

Around here, we’re pretty sure every day is Dog Day. Our lives, Our homes, Our couches, and approximately 97% of Our camera rolls belong to them anyway. 😂

Today we celebrate the spoiled ones, the rescued ones, the foster pups waiting for their forever homes, the seniors, the puppies, the perfectly imperfect ones, and especially the ones who somehow manage to take up an entire king-size bed while weighing 12 pounds.

Give your pups an extra treat, an extra belly rub, and maybe an extra inch of the couch tonight.
And from all of us at Tennessee Dachshund Rescue, Happy National Dog Day to the four-legged little characters who make life so much better.

This past Sunday, we had to say goodbye to another one of our beloved forever fosters. 💔
Shorty came to TDR in 2023 with his bonded mate, Lucy, after they were surrendered to us. In September of that year, our vet gave Shorty three to six months to live.

Apparently, Shorty didn’t get the memo. Those three to six months turned into nearly three more years. Shorty even outlived his beloved Lucy, and according to his foster mom, he spent his bonus time being quite the cantankerous dude. ❤️ And somehow, that makes us love his story even more.

Recently, it became clear that Shorty’s little body was finally getting tired. A large mass in his abdomen was affecting his breathing and his quality of life, and his family knew that the greatest act of love they could give him was to let him go peacefully.

Shorty may have come to TDR as a senior with limited time ahead of him, but he showed us once again why we never put a number on how much life or love a senior dog still has left to give.
Three to Six months became almost three years.

Three years of being loved. Three years of being safe. Three years of doing things Shorty’s way. ❤️

Run free, you cantankerous little dude. Find your Lucy and give her a nudge from all of us.

You were loved right up until the very end, Shorty. And you certainly proved them wrong. 🐾🌈🐾
