Juniper here!

Today’s World Mental Health Day! To everybody out there who is struggling, please know that you matter and are loved and needed in this world. 💜

Wildlife rehabilitation is a rewarding, but also very traumatic, job. Over the years, I have learned that, while I love my work with my whole soul, I owe it to the animals— and to our supporters, and to my family, and to myself— to take some time for at least a few days a year, to focus on self care.

I always schedule my family vacation time for either fall or winter, when there are few animals in rehabilitation and the load is easier for someone else to handle.

I’ll be out of town for the next week exploring the beautiful Everglades National Park with my wife and two of our kiddos. Yes, I absolutely have a list of animals I want to see in the wild there, and yes, I will be on my knees looking for s**t and tracks. No, I won’t run into the wilderness to become a feral swamp hag, though it’s tempting.

As always, the animals will be in excellent care while I’m away, with someone who is well-qualified to make sure their needs are met and to identify and address any problems in need of veterinary attention.

There won’t be any social media updates this week, but you’ll see them all when I’m back in town!

Have a great week!

Happy and happy Spooky Season from T’challa and his fennel-scented scratchable jack-o-lantern! 🎃 He’s spent most of the day making out with it, rolling around beside it, rubbing it, rubbing his a**l glands against it, and really, doing everything short of proposing marriage to it. Don’t kinkshame.

When wildlife patients are recovering with us or, like T’challa, are in our long-term care, enrichment like this gives them opportunities to engage in natural behaviors and explore their environment. Thanks for helping us make T’challa’s silly life possible.

Quasimodo is such a handsome dude!! This wonky box turtle is enjoying life and very active now that it’s warm but no longer oppressively hot. In about a month and a half, he’ll find a cozy spot to bury himself for winter and will take a long nap. While it isn’t strictly necessary for non-releasable reptiles to brumate (the reptile equivalent of hibernating), we try to let our ambassadors have a life as similar as possible to what they’d experience in the wild. Thank you all for making Quasimodo’s happy life possible!

Skunks are often villainized for their noxious odors, but spraying is really only a last resort when they feel they’re in life-threatening danger and when their warnings are ignored. A skunk doesn’t create spray out of thin air: it has to produce this rich, oily substance though an energy-intensive process and store it in a pair of little sacks near their tushies. Emptying these sacks can leave them vulnerable and defenseless and can use more calories than they can safely spare. Please watch for a skunk’s warnings, like tail-lifting, stomping, hissing, and rushing, and back away if you see them. There’s no need to harm your skunk neighbors just because of fear that they might spray!

MONCH! Animals with cheek pouches include chipmunks, hamsters, some rats, gophers, platypuses, koalas, and most most monkeys, but the chipmunk’s are by far the most elastic!

Making a brush pile? Please be mindful of your wild neighbors. If you intend to burn it, do so immediately, before any animals have had time to move in. Otherwise, please leave the pile alone so critters in your community have a safe place to rest and raise their families. We see far too many tragedies that occur because people burn brush piles without realizing there are animals inside. Please help us keep wildlife safe!

Meadow the bobkitten is slowly learning how to behave like a wild animal. She’s eating thawed frozen whole prey now in addition to high-fat kitten food that fills in nutritional gaps that her mother’s milk would be meeting, and she spends most of her waking hours climbing, running, playing, and trying to hunt bugs and toys. She is still much, much more comfortable around humans than we’d like to see, but time and maturity will likely turn things around for her. Thank you all for making her care possible! We can’t wait to see the big, fierce predator she will grow up to be.

Chewtle is an absolutely adorable baby snapping turtle, about the size of a quarter, who will be spending winter with us to get a head start during this very dangerous first stage of life. If he survives his first year, he’s very likely to live to be 50 years old or more. In rare cases, common snapping turtles have been confirmed to be over 100. They are among the many species of turtle and tortoise that experience limited senescence, meaning they don’t have cellular and metabolic changes as they age in the way that most other animals do. Chewtle may well outlive every person reason this post!

Happy Raccoon Appreciation Day from Mallow, who is, in fact, a raccoon!

Raccoons are so common, and so highly adaptable to urban environments, that many regard them as a nuisance, but we think they’re very special animals.

Raccoons are arguably the most intelligent native species in the United States, capable of primate-like problem-solving and complex thought. They keep the world clean by scavenging carrion and rotting fruit and (unfortunately for them) cleaning up our waste and litter. They’re efficient at seed dispersal and help plant native fruits like pawpaws and persimmons. Our world just wouldn’t be the same without them!
