Thursday night -Oct. 8, our Hamilton County Republican School Board members will be defending their vote from last month, to post the Ten Commandments, a sentence from the Declaration of Independence and a sentence from the Preamble to the United States Constitution in each public school.

Hamilton County is the sixth school district in our state to uphold a newly passed Tennessee law, which allows for each school board to post these foundational, historical documents in each of our public schools. Each poster will be purchased by private donors, not spending a dime of tax-payer dollars for this project.

As you can imagine, organizations like the ACLU and the Freedom From Religion Foundation have already started their fight. In addition, local Democrats are planning to pack the board room and speak against their vote.

For over 50 years there were concerted efforts to take God out of the public square. This has resulted in lawsuits all over the country taking down displays and monuments from public spaces. Now, we’re able to turn the tide back to what our Founders intended. In a 2022 Supreme Court decision, Kennedy v. Bremerton, did away with the faulty “Lemon Test” that was being used to harm religious liberty across the country. The court ruled that the history and traditions of our country is what is important, not an arbitrary and subjective test.

🙏 SUNDAY ENCOURAGEMENT

The Ten Commandments aren't simply a list of rules. They are a reminder of the kind of people we are called to be.

Honor your parents.
Do not lie.
Do not steal.
Do not murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not covet.

These are timeless principles of honesty, responsibility, self-control and respect for others.

As parents, we have the responsibility to teach our children right from wrong, not simply through what we say, but through how we live.

“Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road...” — Deuteronomy 11:19

Whatever happens in the culture around us, let's make sure our children know where we stand.

Faith matters. Character matters. Truth matters.

And our children are worth teaching all three. ❤️

📚 SATURDAY CONVERSATION

What should a fifth grader be reading?

This caught our attention.

At Founders Classical Academy in Texas, fifth graders are exposed to works like Don Quixote, Prince Caspian, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Sherlock Holmes.

And before someone says, “Those are too difficult for a 10-year-old”, some of these are adapted editions and selected episodes designed for younger readers. The point is exposure to great literature, ideas, language and stories.

Are we challenging our children enough in Hamilton County Schools?

Not every child will love Shakespeare. Not every child will understand Don Quixote the first time.

That's okay.

Education isn't supposed to be about only giving children material they already understand.

Sometimes it's about introducing them to something bigger than themselves and giving them the tools to wrestle with it.

📰 IN THE NEWS — HAMILTON COUNTY

Hamilton County students are now being introduced to something most of us never learned in school: quantum technology.

TN QuantumWorks is bringing a K–12 quantum technology and career-awareness curriculum into Hamilton County classrooms, with lessons designed for everyone from elementary students to high schoolers.

The goal is to prepare students for technologies and careers that are rapidly developing.

But whenever we're introducing new technology into our schools, there's another question worth asking:

🔐 How are we teaching students about safety, security and responsible use along with the technology itself?

Preparing kids for the future shouldn't just mean teaching them how technology works. It should also mean teaching them how to use it responsibly and understand the risks that come with it.

Should digital safety, cybersecurity and responsible technology use be part of every technology-focused curriculum?

📰 IN THE NEWS — HAMILTON COUNTY

A science experiment at Dalewood Middle School took an unexpected turn last week when a thermometer broke and was initially believed to contain mercury.

The school responded as though there had been a potential exposure. Fourteen students and two teachers were taken to the hospital as a precaution, and the building was temporarily evacuated.

The thermometer was later identified as alcohol-based, and officials confirmed there was no mercury exposure and no harm to students or staff.

📚 TODAY IN EDUCATION HISTORY

September 30, 1936

President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a proclamation recognizing American Education Week and described the purpose of education as preparing young people for their “life work” and their responsibilities as citizens.

Nearly 90 years later, it's worth asking:

What do YOU believe the purpose of education should be?

📖 Preparing children for a career?
🇺🇸 Preparing them for responsible citizenship?
🧠 Giving them a strong foundation of knowledge?
🛠️ Preparing them for real-world responsibilities?
🎓 Preparing them for college?

Maybe the answer is all of the above.

But it's a question worth discussing.

📰 IN THE NEWS: A Hamilton County Schools Bullying Lawsuit

This one goes back a little further.

In 2014, the parents of a student at Chattanooga’s Center for Creative Arts sued Hamilton County Schools, alleging their son had been bullied and sexually harassed and that the school failed to protect him.

The case went through a lengthy trial and appeal.

In 2021, the Tennessee Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court’s judgment in favor of Hamilton County Schools, finding the evidence did not show that school employees failed in their duty or that their response to reported bullying was inappropriate.

The case is a reminder that there’s often a lot more to a lawsuit than the headline.

📰 IN THE NEWS: A 2022 Lawsuit Against Hamilton County Schools

Another lawsuit involving Hamilton County Schools that is worth knowing about.

In December 2022, Jane Doe, Ken Gaskell and Allison Leitch filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit against Hamilton County Board of Education, Hamilton County Schools and two individuals.

The case was filed under 42 U.S.C. §1983. The court allowed Jane Doe to proceed anonymously and sealed an affidavit connected to the case.

The public docket provides only limited information about the underlying allegations, so we're not going to speculate.

But it raises a bigger question:

How many lawsuits have been filed against Hamilton County Schools and what happened in each one?

Maybe it’s time to start looking at the records.
