Fiscal responsibility isn’t flashy, but it’s foundational.

Strong families, strong businesses, and strong states all start with the same principle: living within your means.

In Tennessee, we believe low debt, smart budgeting, and long-term planning create real freedom, not temporary fixes.

Many don’t know the first American thanksgiving was celebrated by proclamation of President George Washington. For him, the proclamation was both a way of showing gratitude for what had been and pointing out what we aspire to be. His words still resonate. In the Black is built on the legacy of Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. — a statesman who believed that government had an obligation to future generations to live within its means.

Fiscal responsibility isn’t just about numbers — it’s about virtue.

So the next time you see a black plate in Tennessee, remember its roots. That it’s a symbol of Dr. Coburn’s call to put our children’s interests ahead of our own. He may have been an Oklahoman, but nothing better captures the Volunteer spirit of Tennessee.

What's this all about?

It's about leaving TN and the country better than we found it. It's about reminding our leaders whom they actually serve. And it's about What We Owe the Future.

Last week, we celebrated In the Black where it first originated — in Chattanooga. Tennessee leaders from across the state gathered in our hometown to discuss the values that will propel Tennessee forward.
