🎨 Why Public Art Matters in Chattanooga
In a recent presentation, Jay Heavilon shared the powerful story behind Montague Sculpture Fields and why this free public sculpture park is such a vital community asset.
Montague Sculpture Fields is a 34–35 acre park featuring nearly 60 monumental sculptures valued at approximately $2.7 million. Open daily from sunrise to sundown and free to the public, the park strengthens community connection, improves well-being, activates underused land, and attracts visitors from across the region—supporting local culture and economic growth.
Because of a long-standing deed agreement, the park receives no city funding and operates entirely as a nonprofit, relying on donations, memberships, sponsorships, events, and volunteers to remain accessible to everyone.
A major highlight of the presentation was the upcoming installation of ISIS by Mark Di Suvero—one of the most significant monumental sculptures of the 20th century. Approximately $100,000 is needed to transport, refurbish, and install this iconic work, which will further elevate the park’s national profile.
Montague Sculpture Fields also hosts signature events, festivals, and educational partnerships that connect art, education, and community.
