While the wisdom of the world offers a gospel of temporary escape from problems and hardships, the Gospel of Jesus Christ offers the promise of suffering. In fact, if you are looking for no wounds, no pain, no sorrow, no tears, no hardships, no afflictions, then you are not looking at Jesus or His cross! In fact, Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” The true gospel is shaped by a suffering Savior whose followers are people shaped by His cross.

Do you suffer from physical illness or disease that you can’t escape from? How you handle your suffering speaks volumes to those around you of your faith in a sovereign God who allows suffering for your good and for His glory! If you want to see how another sufferer handled his suffering, look at the Apostle Paul. In 2 Corinthians 12:7-9, Paul said, “…in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” Suffering brought Paul to his knees. Humbled before Almighty God, he cried out repeatedly for relief. God’s answer strengthened Paul’s resolve to persevere.

Have you ever experienced an attack because of your faith in Christ? While many of us have not as yet dealt with outright persecution for being Christian, the culture of the West has increasingly become hostile to believers. Current examples include mocking, insulting, and “unfriending” on social media for no other reason than being a follower of Jesus. But what’s the actual source of all these negative attitudes toward Christians today? Where is this coming from? The Bible makes it very clear. God has an enemy who’s been given temporary but tremendous control to wreak havoc on Earth until Jesus returns to make all things right. Fortunately, God has equipped believers with armor to protect us from the enemy's attacks.
