The school year has begun and we celebrated the end of summer with a hike at Big Soddy Gulf yesterday. We follow a bit of a different model here at Pack 3271 in that we try to avoid having "meetings." Instead ... we do "outings". It stumps a lot of people when I try to convey this in a unit description in purely a narrative format. Luckily - we have pictures to leverage the explanation on this platform!
We are a Family Pack which means the whole family is welcome to attend. We have younger siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles join in the fun. Yesterday, we were lucky to have a parent that is a geology professor to teach us about the rocks we saw along the way. Adults and kids were enthralled with the hands on physical science lesson in the out of doors. Further explorations at the creek bed invited kids to draw on rocks with charcoal art sticks - testing how the medium worked dry vs wet. There's something magical about exploring the natural world in this up close and personal format.
In the year ahead we have outings planned to the 911 Call Center, elected officials coming to speak about their jobs, camping, nature hikes, pinewood derby builds and races, service projects - all learning opportunities disguised as fun with friends.
I am beyond excited to have this time with all of these kids. Seeing their joy and spirit - and building friendships with their lovely parents is why I volunteer as a leader.
Cheers to a great year ahead! And if anyone wants to join in our outing adventures - we would be thrilled to have you! [email protected]
