The validation for the 2026 Livestock Show project will most likely happen on the last Sat. Of September or the first Sat of October.

What type of steer? Any breed or cross you like. They must be born between August 1, 2024 and May 1, 2025. That puts the oldest steer around 20 months of age at the end of the project. A calf younger than the age usually will not be mature enough to hit a targt market weight or finish.

On heifers you may show any breed or cross. But you have two options on the age of heifers.

Heifers born Jan. 1 to Dec 31, 2024 are eligible to show in 2026. Depending on management a heifer in this age group may have calved before the 2026 show or be pregnant at the time of the show.

Heifers born Jan 1, 2025 July 2025 are eligible to show for two years in 2026 and 2027.

I know with cattle prices where they are it it so tempting to just sell all the calves. Just remember as Mr. Tommy Fuller always says, “this is not a cattle project. It is a youth project to teach, impart knowledge, life lessons, skills, to develop agricultural leaders of the next generation. The vehicle just happens to involves showing livestock.”
