Some things are scarier than they look! Do you know what creepy-crawly Troy is holding in these photos? 🪰

If you guessed a spotted lanternfly, you'd be correct.

While they may look harmless, the spotted lanternfly is highly invasive. Lanternflies feed on over 70 plant species, including maples, grapevines, black walnut, and fruit trees. Heavy feeding weakens these plants and makes them more vulnerable to disease and drought.

Luckily, you can help stop their spread! Squash any lanternflies that you see (yes, really).

When possible, you can also remove tree of heaven (the spotted lanternfly's favorite host plant) from your yard. A healthy, native filled yard will be more resistant to invasive plants and insects.

Someone didn't get the spooky month memo...

No tricks, all treats! These babies are just the cutest!

Though, they will eventually grow into impressive hunters. This time of year, kittens are typically learning to hunt independently. They'll eat smaller mammals such as rabbits and squirrels, and even reptiles or birds.

Have you heard the news? In a few weeks, it will be possible to walk safely and more easily from downtown Hudson to the Empire State Trail.

CLC is partnering with Tahawus Trails LP, a professional trail design and construction company, to create a new and accessible trail system in Hudson. These trails will connect North Third Street to Mill Street and beyond to the Empire State Trail.

Work on the trail is scheduled to be completed by mid-November!

On October 24, join CLC and Alan Devoe Bird Club for a guided fall birding walk. Meet the autumn birds of the newly opened Taghkanic Community Forest!

Hunting season is here in Columbia County!

Here are a few safety tips for anyone enjoying the outdoors during hunting season:

🟠 Wear blaze orange or another highly visible color.
🐶 Keep pets on a leash and consider purchasing high-visibility gear for them as well.
🛑 Stay on designated trails and pay attention to any posted hunting notices.
☀️ Hike during the day, as hunters and game are typically most active during dawn and dusk.
📢 Making noise as you hike can keep hunters (and game) alerted to your presence.

Overmountain, Schor, and Hand Hollow are open for deer hunting to permit holders.

Starting off spooky month with trail cam footage featuring a widely misunderstood marsupial: the opossum.

Opossums get a bad rap - probably something to do with the hissing, the 50 sharp teeth, the playing dead, or the fact that they only come out at night. In reality, opossums are just really shy and anxious.

And while they can't hang upside down by their tails, they can use it for other things. The opossum featured here is using its tail to carry leaves, likely to use for bedding and insulation as colder weather approaches. Can you get any cuter than that?
