Fishery Friendly Climate Action is leading an informal, in-person discussion at the Fishermen’s Alliance on Thursday, June 4 at 5 PM about the high fuel prices affecting our industry and what can be done about it.
This solutions-focused conversation will explore supportive government policies the fishing industry can organize around, including the Farm Bill, USDA Rural Energy for America Program, Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, and more.
Dinner will be provided, and participating fishermen will receive a $100/person stipend.

The scallop research set aside program, known as RSA, is unique to New England. It awards scallop quota to researchers; participating fishermen catch the quota and provide the dollars needed to support the scientific research that improves fishery management decisions.
RSA Share Day happens once a year and brings together fishermen, managers, and scientists to learn about progress and results of RSA projects. The goal is to make everyone aware of findings, learn about new research, and provide opportunities to collaborate.
This May’s RSA Share Day in Falmouth included a demonstration of a polarized microscope that automates identification of shellfish larvae.
“As soon as I saw it,” says Mel Sanderson from the Fishermen’s Alliance, “I reached out to my research partner who is painstakingly sorting through plankton samples to identify and count sea scallop larvae. WHOI research scientist Scott Gallager’s microscope and image detection software will speed up research to understand where sea scallop larvae settle to grow to adulthood and what environmental variables influence their growth rates.”

John Pappalardo’s keynote speech at the annual Big Blue conference hosted by the Cape Cod Blue Economy Foundation was a call to action.
Many coastal communities find themselves caught between “tradition and tourism,” he said. “Between working waterfronts and rising property values. Between local families trying to stay and outside markets willing to pay more. Between climate change and systems of governance still built as though land and sea were separate worlds.”

A fine piece of living artwork is on display at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium.
