Ever the romantic, Mike Anderson describes his love affair with fishing
“Did you ever really love something? We had a community. We got what it was that fascinated us.”
Mike Anderson is talking about commercial fishing during a certain time and place with certain people.
He describes his heydays, the late 1960s through the late 1980s - although he fished for decades after and still quahogs - as “idyllic, Hemingway-esque.”
Anderson arrived on the Cape in the mid-60s, on a quest for striped bass and Pleasant Bay was the mecca. https://capecodfishermen.org/ever-the-romantic-mike-anderson-describes-his-love-affair-with-fishing/

The Fishermen’s Alliance recently accomplished a profound breakthrough, combining three key goals into one new initiative:
🌊Support independent fishermen and improve economic opportunities.
🌊Engage with great scientists to help protect stocks and the industry’s future, bringing fishermen hands-on into the research.
🌊Convince federal regulators to support us, creating smart policies and financial incentives.
This success focuses on one fishery that itself was a great success story. Read more of the article by CEO John Pappalardo here: capecodfishermen.org/when-it-all-comes-together-sharing-an-amazing-success/

Captain John Our has spent the last 47 years fishing the waters off Cape Cod. Over the decades, he's witnessed the rise of the tuna industry, the decline of cod stocks, and the constant evolution of the Chatham Bar. Through it all, he's adapted to the changing conditions that shape life on the water. Hear John's firsthand perspective on how the Chatham Bar impacts his day to day life as a commercial fisherman. Watch the full interview through the YouTube link in our bio.

Family Table Collaborative , Whole Foods, and ‘Small Boats Big Taste’
Maureen Salam jumped in her car the last Thursday afternoon of June and drove from Dennisport to Eastham to meet the Family Table Collaborative’s traveling food van in the Elks Lodge parking lot off Route 6, a trip she makes every two weeks.
She had ordered the day before and was picking up for two or three friends in her neighborhood as well, Moroccan meatballs and Lebanese eggplant, bread, maybe some stuffed peppers, dessert, bananas, prepared and packaged in the big kitchen the Collaborative runs at their headquarters in South Yarmouth. https://capecodfishermen.org/family-table-collaborative-adds-small-boats-big-taste-to-their-great-meals/

We received great news earlier this month: The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced a major award to bolster the American seafood industry through the NSF Regional Innovation Engines program. The NSF Seafood Engine in New England, led by the Portsmouth-based non-profit Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems NERACOOS , is a collaboration of seafood industry, tech sector, government, and research partners across Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, including Fishermen’s Alliance. We are excited to start transformative work with commercial fishermen and about two dozen partners.

60 years on the water comes with a few stories. 🎣 Pier host Mike Anderson has plenty to tell, from 1,000 pound tuna to the everyday questions about what’s coming across the dock. Stop by the Chatham Fish Pier, ask questions, and learn from someone who knows these waters firsthand.

Water is the lifeblood of Cape Cod, surrounding our coastline and flowing through our rivers, marshes, and aquifers. 🌊 Whether you’re fishing, swimming, or simply turning on the tap, protecting our shared waters matters.

One way to help is by choosing a Massachusetts Environmental Trust specialty license plate. Over the past 30 years, MET has invested more than $25 million into nearly 1,000 conservation projects led by over 300 organizations, including the Fishermen’s Alliance.

We’re grateful for MET’s support of our 2026 Small Boats. Big Science. events and for every driver already displaying an MET plate. 💙

When you renew, purchase, or lease your next vehicle, consider choosing a plate that helps protect the waters we all depend on. Visit mass.gov/eea/met to learn more.
