Our final spotlight in our tree planting for pollinators series is ! A rainy morning quickly became a glorious spring day of planting as volunteers installed 110 bare-root trees amongst an existing oak plantation at the new Hearty Roots Farm site in Red Hook.

At this event, we added flowering trees to woodland edges and clearings, and reforested a hard-to-farm hillside with birch, dogwood, and oak. Plantings are visible on the east side of Route 9, just north of Red Hook, so keep an eye out for abundant flowering branches popping out of tree tubes in seasons to come!

We’re so grateful to our farm partners, volunteers, the forestry crew of , and for helping to create pollinator habitat on farmland across the Hudson Valley. And the work doesn’t stop with our spring tree plantings - watch for more opportunities to get involved in municipal pollinator gardens and on-farm wildflower meadows later this season! We can’t wait to see you out on the land.

Today in our tree planting for pollinators series, we’re spotlighting ! Thanks to our wonderful volunteers of all ages for helping plant 100 native trees and shrubs on a new farm site near Orange County’s famous Black Dirt region.

For this project, we added dogwoods, willows, and other wetland species to revegetate a pond edge in a DEC-protected wetland area, then filled in upland wood edges with young oaks and pines, flowering redbuds and serviceberries, and other pollinator favorites.

With the aid of the crew we navigated digging in dense clay, added tree tubes for deer protection, and enjoyed a golden hour planting serenaded by birds, frogs and the first bumblebees of spring.

Today in our tree planting for pollinators series, we’re spotlighting ! As part of our native planting initiative supported by , an incredible volunteer crew installed 135 bare-root shade trees, flowering trees, and suckering shrubs, including upland willow species, birch, sumac, oak, plum and more.

Plantings were installed along greenhouses near the Glynwood Farm Store and in pastures and hedgerows amidst the farm’s wilder areas. They will provide shade for livestock, buffers against weather, and support for caterpillars, bumblebees and hundreds of other native insects.

Special thanks to Annabel Roberts-McMichael and the crew for teaching us the ins and outs of bare-root tree planting at our planting events this spring, from root pruning to tree tubing for deer protection to the best way to build a mulch volcano. We’re excited to see these plantings grow!

Today we’re spotlighting , the second farm partner in our spring tree planting extravaganza! An intrepid volunteer crew showed up strong on a rainy April Saturday to plant native bare-root trees for pollinator support at the Seed Company’s new farm in Accord.

We installed borders of flowering serviceberry, chokecherry, and native plum, filled in hedgerows with maples and pines, and added groups of ornamental natives near the farm store.

Many of the newly planted trees adjoin the seed plots where PollinateHV local ecotype seed crops are thriving. Visit the link in bio to shop these native varieties grown from local wild genetics. Interested in seeing the plantings in bloom? Keep an eye on the Hudson Valley Seed Company website for events throughout the season, including farm tours, U-pick dahlias, educational opportunities and more.

This spring we planted trees for pollinators! With the support of , PCA’s PollinateHV project installed hundreds of native trees on local farms across the Hudson Valley. We’re thrilled to share more about our farm partners and the many volunteers who made it happen!

First up is the Hudson Valley Research Laboratory in Highland, which includes a research station and trial orchard home to dozens of apple varieties. This project added a native berry orchard! Multiple varieties of elderberry, aronia, and serviceberry were planted and will be monitored for pollinator use, fruit production, vigor, and more. Future educational programs are planned for farmers interested in bringing these powerhouse native crops to their fields.

Special thanks to Berry Specialist Heather Kase and the whole Research Lab crew who installed the brand-new orchard of over 70 plants on the first warm day of spring!

Calling all Dutchess County pollinator lovers! Join PCA to help prepare three garden beds at the Red Hook Recreational Park on Wednesday, May 13, from 5-7 PM. Park at the Red Hook Recreation Park Pavilion and meet us just inside the fence where we'll be digging out turfgrass and spreading mulch to prepare for the planting of hundreds of flowers that support our most vulnerable native pollinators. Plus, save the date for planting the gardens on June 15, and keep an eye out for more garden opportunities with PCA and municipal partners across the Hudson Valley soon!

No RSVP needed - come one, come all! Email [email protected] with questions.

Join us on May 19th at 8:30 am for our next Morning Coffee! We'll be joined by rewilding experts Renee Seacor and Scott LaPoint for their talk, "Rewilding at Work in the Hudson Valley." Free and virtual. Link to register in our bio.

Details:

Rewilding efforts happen all around us: beavers create wetlands that boost biodiversity; human-made dam removal revives fish migration and allows ecosystems to recover. It is sometimes misunderstood as the intentional absence of human influence, but that is not the case. Rewilding is a partnership with nature which aims to rebuild inherent resilience and capacity. It includes practices such as the reintroduction of lost species, the removal of invasive species, and the restoration of landscape connectivity. The goal is to eventually reduce the need for management and hasten recovery as a discipline that acknowledges the agency of non-human beings within the Earth’s natural processes. The benefits to us, the beings we share our place with, and the ecosystems in which we all live are clear and well-studied.

Join us on May 19th at 8:30 am for our May Morning Coffee Series installment, “Rewilding at Work in the Hudson Valley,” when we will be joined by Mighty Earth’s Renee Seacor and Black Rock Forest’s Director of Research Scott LaPoint, who will discuss the basics of rewilding practices and research and how this movement is supporting wildlife connectivity efforts. He will also touch on how this practice seeks the re-establishment of lost species diversity in our region and beyond. Paige Ruane moderates, followed by a Q&A with our speakers.

Explore a hidden gem of Hudson Valley ecology with forester Annabel Roberts-McMichael! Meander through the Old Growth Forest at Bard’s Montgomery Place Campus, where we'll discuss what makes old-growth forests unique and spend time connecting with the forest community, including special trees, fungi, flowers and more. We'll learn to identify the native and non-native plants we encounter, with special attention to edible and medicinal uses, and learn ways to care for local woodlands of all ages and sizes. Participants should be comfortable navigating uneven terrain in a forest setting.

Annabel Roberts-McMichael is a Hudson-based forester, forager, and environmental educator. Her ecological forestry practice, Tend and Gather, offers foraging and ecology walks as well as consultation and labor services to enhance ecosystem and forest health, biodiversity, and climate resilience, while connecting people with foods in the ecosystem and tending wild abundance.

Our six Funding Futures fellows have been hard at work over the past year reaching out to their communities through phone calls, email newsletters, postcards, tabling at events, and meetings with organizations, leaders, and townsfolk. These efforts culminated in a series of direct democracy gatherings this past winter, where attendees bonded with their neighbors over shared meals and music, and were invited to make their voices heard–via mic, surveys, and idea boxes. We invite you to view photo essays from these generative events through the link in our bio.

Next up: town-wide balloting efforts based on those suggestions and ideas collected over the winter. If you live in Millbrook, Highlands, Claverack and Philmont, Rochester, or Woodbury, be sure to make your voice heard and take part in this exciting process!
