February 2024 marks the 2nd anniversary of the war on Ukraine, inviting a time for reflection and memories amongst refugees and community members alike. Both memories of better days at home in peace and gratefulness for the safe haven URMCC has helped create.

While this time can be difficult, URMCC President, Tom Johnson, brightened the mood with a visit to Poland and brought with him an annual tradition of a pizza party 🍕🇺🇦🌻

Winter camp is in session at the community center! 43 Polish and Ukrainian children have been participating in a camp this past week and have engaged in outings to the theater, bowling alley, parks, and the ice rink. Campers have also been taking first aid classes, dance classes, candle making classes, and so much more!

The month of January has brought splashes of color to the Promenada hotel dining room! The theme of the hand painted art work is WOMAN.

Women are muses, wives, daughters, friends, and so much more. Every woman is different and experiences hardships every day, especially today when the war has forced a life away from home. Brave, sensitive, strong, and delicate and just some of the magical combinations of traits that embody the women at the foundation.

All this and more can be seen in these paintings - each different, each unique.

It was a special day at the Promenada Hotel on Monday! For the second year in a row, refugees from Ukraine will spend this magical winter time in Poland, in their temporary home in Ostróda. The magic of Christmas came and the entire hotel sparkled with lights and the Christmas tree decorated together brought great joy to children and adults. In the kitchen, preparations for Christmas dinner are underway and refugees are preparing what they like most - dumplings!

December 9 was a day full of surprises at the Promenada Hotel with visit from Tom, Jim and Ryan and Santa Claus🎅🏼! It was an evening full of excitement, gifts, children’s joy and emotions. Our Foundation’s celebrated with a wonderful dinner prepared personally by Tom, Jim and Ryan. All refugees from Ukraine gathered in the center’s restaurant and sat down at the table together. More moments that will remain in hearts and memories forever.

Christmas crafting is in full swing at the community center! In preparation for the festive holiday, Christmas ornament making workshops and teachings of traditional Polish traditions are in full swing 🎄🎁🇺🇦

Thanksgiving Day at the Polish-American Foundation for Aid to Ukraine🇵🇱🇺🇸🇺🇦

The dining room of the Promenada Hotel, a temporary home for refugees from Ukraine, was filled with residents and friends who support the ongoing foundation activities. A formal dinner at a large communal table, time spent together in an atmosphere of camaraderie, unity and gratitude for all the good that was experienced in the past year.

On behalf of our entire Ukrainian community, we would like to express our great thanks for all the help, kindness, support and commitment coming from the US to Poland. Thank you for the greatest gift, which is every next safe day of life.

Nothing brings people together like a shared table. Today, the temporary refugee home welcomed three new residents who came to Poland because of the war in their homeland. Dinner together is a time when refugees are closer to each other, closer to us. This is the tradition of our center... a time of conversations, memories and children's games. Several dozen different people and different life stories who were united by the same misfortune... war. 20 months away from home and questions that only multiply with each passing day. In their imaginations, they walk around their homes in Ukraine... they sit on their sofa, open the wardrobe and remember the clothes they left there. In their minds they ask themselves one question... when will we go home? but it still remains unanswered. The smiles on their faces on the evening like this are the best sign that what we do for them makes unquestionable sense.

Halloween celebrations were in full swing last week at the Polish American Foundation! Pumpkin carving, a feast of sweets and pizza, and many costumes made for a spooky and festive Halloween 🎃 👻🇺🇦

To accomplish our goals outlined in the message from Tom and James, we ask for your help in reaching our goal of $300,000 USD to continue operations at our current scale. Along with the start of school earlier this month, community center members have been busy with various activities including cooking classes, Royal Rangers scouting classes, and continuous Polish and English language lessons and homework help for Ukrainian refugees within the community.
