We tried to meet in the middle- in talks over the last two weeks with SC leadership, the BPTA moved to lessen the number of silent reps in the bargaining space, in conjunction with a previous offer made by the School Committee to allow a livestream to our remaining reps in the union caucus room, so that every department could have at least 1 member directly observing negotiations. We had hoped this signaled a shift in the School Committee’s intent to move forward and meet us back at the table.

Within four emails, you can read this attempt to compromise fall apart.

The initial hearing for the ULPs we have filed with the MA Department of Labor Relations will begin in June. Another avoidable waste of taxpayer money on unnecessary legal fees, all to compel the District to sit with their employees and negotiate.

Transparency and representation- that’s all we ask.

Educators across MA have to work together for fight for our public school system, as the foundation of equal opportunity for all students and a strong future for our communities. The BPTA is thankful for the MTA’s support as we ask the District to return to the table and bargain a fair contract for our teachers, student support staff, and paraprofessionals 🍎

“Some days it feels like you’re shouting into the wind, wondering if you are reaching anyone, if any of it matters.

It does.”

At the end of this teacher appreciation week, the BPTA wants to share its gratitude for all of our educators, support staff, allies, and members of the community who have listened to us, shared our story, and stood by us in the fight for a fair contract and a way forward for Bay Path 💜 We are stronger together, for our students, for our school 🍎

We appreciate the local cover to these important issues. For clarity, Chairperson Grenier is referring to the Unit C (para) negotiations on the 13th, it is Unit A (educators and student support staff) who do not yet have any dates to return to the table.

Thank you to everyone following and supporting our fight for fair contracts!

Speakers raise concerns over staffing cuts, school safety and educator burnout during packed meeting

Last night, Union members and supporters came to the School Committee meeting with a simple ask- return to the table and negotiate a fair contract. The BPTA has offered the School Committee 12 bargaining dates over May and June to meet and work out an agreement. All we need to start is one.

A coworker who leaves flowers on another’s desk after a hard day. A student who stays behind to help clean up after a group project. A custodian who works through their break to set up an event. A parent who asks if the field trip needs any chaperones. A coach who encourages their athlete after a tough loss. A teacher who volunteers their weekend to cheer their student on at Skills.

This is why Bay Path is a school worth fighting for. This is why the BPTA is demanding to sit at a table and work out a fair contract. This is why we need the community’s help.

Please join us tomorrow night at the School Committee hearing and show the District the way forward is working together, for the school and the students, and the future of Bay Path 💜 💛

The BPTA is fighting to keep our school staffed and our students safe- the District has cut our SRO. Our School Resource Officer works with students in crisis everyday. This is another reckless decision made by the School Committee, cutting the position that is here to protect our students and school.

Join us at the May 4th School Committee meeting to fight for the rights of our staff and students. We need community support!

We agree with Mr. Cloutier’s statement- the school committee is supposed to be the superintendent’s boss. This is why we’ve appealed directly to the school committee chair, Ben LaMountain, and the negotiations chair, Dave Grenier, to take charge of the District’s negotiations and return to the table. Abdicating their authority to a legal team that has billed more than 100k out of the District is not what’s best for the staff of Bay Path. We deserve to negotiate with our employers, who we trust to have what’s best for our students in mind, not what’s best for a law firm’s billable hours.

Transparency and representation is all we ask. The law protects the union’s right to determine its own negotiations team. We expect the School Committee to respect our bargaining rights and return to the table.

Join us on May 4th to show the School Committee our communities support resuming contract negotiations. We should be focusing on a fair and equitable contract, respect for our educators, and the needs of the students of our school.

For community members looking to support the BPTA’s quest to resume negotiations, one of the most direct actions is to email your town’s representatives and tell them to return to the table! Support from the families, alumni, and taxpayers of our towns is invaluable to making sure we are all working together for the betterment of Bay Path!
