Racing to the end of the year- and the end of our contract. The School Committee walked out of negotiations on March 19th, 95 days ago. Bay Path educators are walking out tomorrow with absolutely no promise of a return to the table.

Is this the message our staff deserve? Endless money for lawyers, but for some reason sitting in a room and negotiating with their employees is too much to ask.

Bay Path staff, and by extension our students, deserve better.

Email your School Committee reps and demand they negotiate!

A step forward & a call to action:

The BPTA won a major victory! The Department of Labor Relations ruled in the union’s favor, that there was sufficient evidence the District violated labor law by walking out on bargaining and refusing to return unless the union gave up its right to an expanded team.

This is not the end of the legal battle to get the School Committee back to in-person negotiations, but it is an important validation that the union is justified in standing up for our bargaining rights.

The question now- is the District going to waste even more money and time fighting the union? Or will they accept this initial finding by the DLR and resume contract talks?

At the end of the post is a quick email template & the email addresses of the school committee members.

Please take a few minutes and email your town’s representatives- the BPTA needs the SC to hear from their own voters- stop wasting time and legal fees, get back to bargaining with the educators. It’s what is best for our students, our staff, and our school!

💜 💛 🍎 💪🏼

Not included by the Superintendent- his decision not to share the impact of this shortfall with the towns when electing not to propose an expanded budget that could cover all, or even part, of the deficit. Instead making the decision, behind closed doors, to cut services and staff that are essential to the safety of our school and success of our students. The voters deserved the opportunity to make an informed choice.

Teachers at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School are reeling over planned staff cuts. See link below ⬇️

We appreciate local journalism and its dedication to covering issues that matter to our communities- public awareness of the crisis at Bay Path is essential to protecting the students and services of our school 🍎

Speakers say layoffs are harming student services, literacy support and special education programs as labor tensions continue at regional vocational school

06/05/2026

Vocational education, like all public education, needs to be accessible and equitable for ALL students. Prioritizing administrative roles and raises over student serving programs like Title I, cutting multiple special ed positions, and proposing unilateral changes to the delivery of services in our inclusion and LC classes is NOT in the best interest of the students and families of our school.

06/03/2026

We come to the School Committee and to the public to make clear the stakes that face our Bay Path- the cuts to essential services that help support our students, their learning, and their success. Denying the ten towns the information about the impact of the budget shortfall, not giving the taxpayers the opportunity to decide whether to vote for an expanded budget to save positions like the school resource officer, librarian, and reading specialist is a mistake- one we hope the School Committee will reconsider.

On Sunday night, Bay Path’s Class of 2026 walked across the stage with the distinct accomplishment of 100% of students earning their diploma. This celebration was the culmination of years of hard work, learning, growth, and commitment to preparing for opportunities in our communities and beyond. As their teachers, coaches, and mentors, the staff of Bay Path were honored to have worked side by side with these students and have one last chance to cheer them on 📣

Last night, the BPTA again appeared in front of the school committee to ask for their help to ensure the success of the Class of 2026 can be repeated in years to come. In the last two months the District has cut almost 10% of our teaching and support staff. Every one of these cuts is a loss; two in particular we drew attention to last night: our Certified Media Librarian and Title I Reading specialist positions, both eliminated next year.

We know Bay Path is not the only school facing a budget shortfall. We challenge Superintendent Brenner’s decision not present the towns a choice for an expanded budget that would have covered, even in part, the $1.3 million dollar deficit that resulted in these devastating cuts.

The union believes firmly the taxpayers of the ten towns deserved the right to make an informed choice. Once again, the union questions why so many of the decisions of Bay Path are made behind closed doors, without the input of our educators and transparency to the public regarding the impact of what is happening at our school.

Transparency, representation, and support are what we ask. We hope the School Committee and the public recognize our calls to action are centered on the fight for what is best for the students of our school 💜 💛

We tried to meet in the middle- in talks over the last two weeks with SC leadership, the BPTA moved to lessen the number of silent reps in the bargaining space, in conjunction with a previous offer made by the School Committee to allow a livestream to our remaining reps in the union caucus room, so that every department could have at least 1 member directly observing negotiations. We had hoped this signaled a shift in the School Committee’s intent to move forward and meet us back at the table.

Within four emails, you can read this attempt to compromise fall apart.

The initial hearing for the ULPs we have filed with the MA Department of Labor Relations will begin in June. Another avoidable waste of taxpayer money on unnecessary legal fees, all to compel the District to sit with their employees and negotiate.

Transparency and representation- that’s all we ask.

Educators across MA have to work together for fight for our public school system, as the foundation of equal opportunity for all students and a strong future for our communities. The BPTA is thankful for the MTA’s support as we ask the District to return to the table and bargain a fair contract for our teachers, student support staff, and paraprofessionals 🍎
