Temperatures this week will be more typical of mid-summer than early June, and it's important to take the heat seriously.

Stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and never leave children or pets in a vehicle. Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

A few simple precautions can help you stay safe as temperatures climb this week.

We’re bringing back and throwing it back to 1976 when construction to pedestrianize Main Street was nearing completion after beginning in 1974. Did you know that the project cost $2 million dollars and passed in city council only by 2 votes? Join us over the next few weeks as we count down to the 50th celebration party on July 3rd with throwbacks from each decade of the Mall! Thank you to for the photo!

UPDATE: Mint Springs Valley Park is Opening for Swimming May 30 -- Mint Springs Valley Park is open following multiple tests showing normal water quality.

There have been no reported health problems, however, the Department of Parks and Recreation closed the lake earlier this month after test results showed harmful algae present. It is now safe again to have contact with the water.

Chris Greene Lake Park and Walnut Creek Park were not affected, and all three swimming lakes will be open for swimming this Saturday and Sunday, May 30–May 31, from 10 am - 6 pm.

Beginning June 1, the lakes will observe summer operating hours, open 7 days a week from 10 am to 6 pm, through August 9. After August 9, hours will transition back to weekends only at Chris Greene Lake until Labor Day, September 7.

Join us at Ting Pavilion for The Arts for All FestivALL (June 7) — a free family music festival featuring hands-on arts activities from eight local organizations at 5pm, followed by a concert that’s anything but small: a full orchestra, more than 70 singers, and ballet dancers taking the stage together for an unforgettable night of Broadway favorites and opera classics.

Presented by Charlottesville Opera, in partnership with Charlottesville Ballet, Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia, and The Oratorio Society of Virginia. Free and open to all. 🩰

Come explore the arts with activities from Empowered Players, DMR Adventures, Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia, Light House Studio, Charlottesville Band, The Paramount Theater of Charlottesville, Virginia Theatre Festival, and The Oratorio Society of Virginia.

🎉 We're less than one month away from the Downtown Mall's 50th Birthday Party!

Join us on July 3 for a full day of free activities celebrating 50 years of community on the Downtown Mall. Highlights include historical tours, free ice cream and face painting, a performance by Baaba Seth at Ting Pavilion, a lantern parade, and a special 50th anniversary light show.
