International Relations Organization at UVA

The International Relations Organization is the umbrella organization for various international relations-related bodies and events.

The International Relations Organization (IRO) is a contracted independent organization that is run entirely by students. Our membership ranges from philosophy and foreign affairs majors to engineering students, but all share an interest in current international affairs. Statement of Non-Affiliation
Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have Univers

ity employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not apart of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.

This week we have our first speaker of the semester: Professor Siva Vaidhyanathan of the UVA Media Studies department will talk at Jeff Hall/Hotel C on Wednesday at 7pm. Professor Vaidhyanathan directs the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia, which hosts a Democracy Lab, produces several podcasts, and a magazine-- he has also appeared in several documentaries, the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the Daily Show. Please feel free to invite your friends for the Wednesday meeting!! There will be pizza.

The International Relations Organization at UVA is devastated by the loss of our classmates Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragedy and extend our heartfelt condolences. We encourage all our members to take time for themselves and be with their loved ones during these difficult times. Additionally, we hope everyone can attend the memorial service scheduled for Saturday, 11/19, at 3:30pm in JPJ. Overflow seating can be found at Klockner Stadium and Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. It will also be streamed for those unable to make it in person. As a reminder, Counseling and Psychological Services can be reached at 434-243-5150, TimelyCare is available 24/7 using your student email address, and the Dean on Call can be reached at 434-924-7133. Please reach out to those resources if you need help.

The Executive Board of the International Relations Organization at UVA stands in support of the right of the women and students of Iran to protest their government without fear of violent retaliation and repression of dissent. As an organization that focuses on international affairs and politics, we feel a responsibility to raise awareness about these events, and encourage everyone to learn more about this situation.
In September, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested and beaten by Iran’s “morality police” for wearing her hijab in a way that they deemed improper. She fell into a coma and passed away three days later. Since her death, protests have erupted throughout the nation, challenging the government’s strict hijab laws and criticizing the regime overall. The government has not been responsive to these calls for change, and has reacted with unmitigated violence towards protesters, resulting in dozens of deaths if not more. The regime has instituted internet blackouts in an attempt to silence dissent, and people within the country are calling for others to speak out. Reports have come out on the violent crackdown by security forces against the students on university campuses. As fellow students, we stand with their right to protest for their most basic rights.

IRO!! This Wednesday at 7pm in Jeff Hall, Professor Warburg of the Batten school will be our first speaker of the year! Professor Warburg has decades of experience working in Congress before coming to Batten and will present for the first part of the meeting before opening up to Q&A. There will be free pizza! Bring ur friends and we hope to see you all there!
