"Now a thriving second-year student hoping to major in global public health at the University of Virginia, Bowles is looking to his roots, drawing inspiration and giving back wherever he can."

Johntrell Bowles spent nearly half of his life either homeless or in foster care. Rather than flounder, the second-year student is using that experience to give back to the University and Charlottesville.

The theme for the 2018 Community MLK Celebration is “Be the Difference.” Dr. King dedicated his life to being the difference. With powerful speeches, sit-ins, and marches, Dr. King fought for the causes of social and racial equity and, in the process, he brought about positive change. To counteract the voices of hatred and bigotry today, all of us must consider how we can "be the difference."

Thank you to Cameron Webb (2005) and Gregory Jackson Jr. (2007) who brought more than 200 alumni together on the messaging app GroupMe, to talk about what they could do to help students and correct inaccuracies in the national conversation.

Even as chaos and violence continued to unfold in Charlottesville on Saturday, UVA alumni were coming together in the city and online to talk about how they could help.

Just months after her graduation in 2014, University of Virginia alumna Councilwoman Jennifer Bowles took on a challenge that many are unwilling to attempt until later in life. She saw problems in her hometown of Martinsville and successfully ran for City Council to address them.

When Jennifer Bowles saw a problem in her community, she spoke out. Now the 2014 graduate is one of the youngest elected officials in Virginia.

More than 300 people crowded into McLeod Auditorium at the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing on Friday, April 7 to honor the school’s first African-American enrollee and graduate, Mavis Claytor. She charmed the audience, joked and told stories of her family, her early education in segregated Virginia and the hurdles and triumphs she faced during integration, and at UVA.

Mavis Claytor, the first African-American student to enter and graduate from UVA’s School of Nursing, returned to the school last week to share her life’s story.
