A great book on this subject is by Sherrilyn Ifill is On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting the Legacy of Lynching in the Twenty-first Century. Although it is national in scope, it also focuses on Maryland and especially Maryland's Eastern Shore.

What can Charlottesville learn from one of the most successful African American-led development corporation’s in the country? Join us on Wednesday, January 9th at 7:00 pm in the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center to welcome Mtamanika Youngblood and Donell Woodson from Atlanta’s Historic District Development Corporation’s to Charlottesville. Learn about the work this organization is doing to preserve and revitalize Atlanta’s historically black Sweet Auburn neighborhood, site of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s boyhood home.

Following their presentation, Ms. Youngblood and Mr. Woodson will be joined on stage by City Councilor Dr. Wes Bellamy for a conversation about how a development corporation would work within the context of his incentive package, and how lessons learned in Atlanta might serve as a roadmap for community transformation in Charlottesville. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Bevin Etienne, Professor in the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

Construction is underway on the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, with significant site work beginning on the “triangle of grass” near Brooks Hall and across University Avenue from the Corner.

London university calls for £100m slavery reparation.

Last month, Glasgow University revealed it had received slave-related funding.

Glasgow University discovered that up to £198m in today's value had been donated in the 19th Century by people who had profited from the slave trade.

In response it announced a "reparative justice programme", including creating a centre for the study of slavery and a memorial to the enslaved.

'Historic opportunity'
But Mr Thompson says there should be a collective university fund to support today's black and ethnic minority students through university.

UK universities which gained from slave trade are asked to pay into fund for ethnic minority students.
