LEAD at UVA

Nationwide there are concerns regarding the question of at-home vs. in-school teaching, and how this will worsen disparities for families who already experience reduced access to educational resources. In response to this crisis, C'ville STEM is organizing a fundraiser to deliver STEM boxes, which contain basic supplies for completing STEM projects at home, to elementary school kids in the Charlottesville area.​

STEM education is considered an integral part of an elementary student's development. Although students have access to many tools and materials at school labs, access to those same resources at home is unequal. The provision of a STEM box, supplemented with materials from each school, will provide young students with the same capabilities to complete a wide range of projects and challenges at home. Teachers can be certain every student has an equal opportunity to engage with the STEM curriculum and attain the same leaning outcomes.​

An exciting aspect of Chemistry Camp is that it is held in general chemistry teaching laboratories at the UVA Department of Chemistry. These labs are where many college students begin their journey as young scientists. At Chemistry Camp, students will perform experiments in the same laboratory setting!

Support a nonprofit this President’s Day!
LEAD is run by chemistry graduate students at UVA who visit the Discovery Museum, elementary schools, and Computers for Kids (C4K) to promote science education and awareness. You can support LEAD and STEM outreach by registering for Chemistry Camp, which funds our supplies and visits each year.

Kid*Vention was a SMASH hit! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth, we had a great time squishing strawberries with the kids to extract DNA. We hope everyone had as much fun as we did, and that we'll see you again soon at Chemistry Camp 2020 (Feb. 22)!

We’re excited to announce that at this year’s Chemistry Camp, we’re exploring concepts about sustainability. From renewable energy to greenhouse gases, students will learn how their actions can make an impact on the environment. Please help us get the word out so we can raise money for the LEAD outreach organization and make a difference in STEM education in central Virginia!
