Cultivate Charlottesville

Cultivate Charlottesville Cultivate works together to grow gardens, share food and power, and advocate for just food systems

At City Schoolyard Garden, we Plant-Grow-Harvest with Charlottesville youth. City Schoolyard Garden hosts gardens and garden programs at eight Charlottesville City public schools. We cultivate academic achievement, health, environmental stewardship and community engagement through garden-based experiential learning and leadership development.

Spring has brought out in our community and school growing spaces. Our team, students, and volunteers have been hard at work getting the gardens ready for planting. We used donated RevitaSoil to augment our soil amendments and make sure we had great ground for growing.

We had a GREAT day in the garden on Saturday with some Jackson-Via jackrabbits and their families. Thank you to everyone who came out to lend a hand with weeding, planting, up potting, watering, and organizing the shed!

Cormac, a Jackson-Via jackrabbit, drew the illustration that was used on the March Harvest of the Month poster!

Students across the city LOVED the fresh kale snacks that volunteers passed out. A parent emailed the Cultivate team with this request:
My son goes to Trailblazer and came out with a small scrap of paper on which he had written the ingredients for this month’s harvest of the month: kale, lemon, vinegar, salt. He was ecstatic and said he’d eaten ten clumps. If you get this and can give me a little more intel as to how you actually prepared it, I’d be super grateful!
Thanks for the cool program!

The City of Charlottesville has been hosting Climate Cafés to bring together local organizations and neighbors who are advocating for or have questions about our local response to climate sustainability.

Last week the theme was Every Eats: Food Justice and Access, and Cultivate was thrilled to be in the room with so many of our partners to facilitate the discussion. Stay tuned for next steps that the City identifies as we all work together to make Charlottesville RESILIENT TOGETHER.

It’s JAM-UARY!!! Which means yesterday for Harvest of the Month city students tasted damson plum jam made locally by CHS graduate Daniel Perry.

This was our first time collaborating to serve and from what we heard “OLIVIA! This is FIRE,” we’re thinking this partnership is a plum good idea 😜
