At City Schoolyard Garden, we Plant-Grow-Harvest with Charlottesville youth. City Schoolyard Garden hosts gardens and garden programs at eight Charlottesville City public schools. We cultivate academic achievement, health, environmental stewardship and community engagement through garden-based experiential learning and leadership development.

Behind the scenes of the food justice interns’ collaboration with LightHouse Studios to highlight local Black food pathways.

Cultivate interns researched each expert, developed questions, and led interviews while the folks from LightHouse worked to capture the best moments from the conversations and everyone’s time on location.

On this day, the interns met Dr. Leni Sorensen who is an ICONIC culinary historian who has done everything from writing books to being featured in Netflix’s award-winning series “High on the Hog” to leading the Obama family on tours of Monticello. Dr. Sorensen spoke with Laila about her own history, which included cofounding and performing in the all-female folk group The Womenfolk in the 1960s, and why our collective food history is deeply important.

CONGRATULATIONS to the entire Charlottesville Middle School Young Knights community—past and present—on the official, OFFICIAL, official grand opening of the new campus 🧡🖤🤍🩶

We were thrilled to be there for today’s celebration of the amazing work that has been done to bring more love, light, and learning to city school students in grades 6, 7, and 8.

VMDO architects led tours of the amazing space so we got to see the outdoors areas (INCLUDING WHERE THE NEW GARDEN WILL BE), the media center (which has a GORGEOUS desk made of wood from trees from the property), and the new gym (which includes an entire physical education hub with multiple fitness rooms.

Behind the scenes of the food justice interns’ collaboration with LightHouse Studios to highlight local Black food pathways.

Cultivate interns researched each expert, developed questions, and, this time, Markajah and Zeniah led the interview while the folks from LightHouse worked to capture the best moments from the conversation and everyone’s time on location.

On this day, the interns met Philip Cobbs who has stewarded his family’s land in Albemarle County for decades. He took our entire crew on a tour of Buck Island, the land where he grew up which includes a portion that is now owned by the County and is slated to become a public park. Mr. Cobbs also welcomed our interns and staff to hike his currently owns which was once part of Garland Farm and is now known as Spring Valley Farm.

On this day, the interns met Sarah Morton who co-owns Cattle Run Farm with her brother. She spoke with Izaiah and Liam about her family’s history with this land, her experience in both agriculture and education, and the deep commitment it takes to do this work.

Thank you to our friends at Market Central for supporting our initiative to get interns and neighbors out to the market at IX in addition to our Cultivate community market days.

Because we don’t offer eggs, dairy, or meat—we want to make sure folks know about the opportunities to buy additional fresh, local food for their families. We know that goods from farmers markets can be expensive, but there are things in place such as VIRGINIA FRESH MATCH that help to *double* a family’s food assistance when it is used to purchase fresh produce.

The PHA ambassadors and Cultivate interns worked together to help host our community market day at Kindlewood with a focus on environmental sustainability.

Young people from both organizations led participants through an exercise testing their recycling knowledge; assisted residents picking out fresh produce; and taught folks how to plant their own flowers in newspaper DIY pots.

That brings our partnership with the PHA ambassadors to a close for this year, but we hope to do something similar in the future!
