Cultivate works together to grow gardens, share food and power, and advocate for just food systems

At City Schoolyard Garden, we Plant-Grow-Harvest with Charlottesville youth. City Schoolyard Garden hosts gardens and garden programs at eight Charlottesville City public schools. We cultivate academic achievement, health, environmental stewardship and community engagement through garden-based experiential learning and leadership development.

Golden hour was the perfect backdrop for our Power to Grow community market day popup at Booker T. Washington Park this week. Neighbors came to pick up fresh produce, connect with friends, participate in a really cool okra stamping activity, and learn about our work to bring growing spaces to public parks in the city.

Our friends at IRC New Roots were there as well to talk about their plans for an expanded garden site near their current location next to Azalea Park. Both organizations are very excited about working with city officials to move forward the call for more space for urban agriculture.

Come see us next Wednesday for our pop-up community market day at Booker T. Washington Park. Our partners IRC New Roots will join us at the lower level pavilion from 3 to 5 pm. Community market days are for folks who live in subsidized or public housing or don’t have access to fresh produce to pick up vegetables at no cost.

Behind the scenes of the food justice interns’ collaboration with LightHouse Studios to highlight local Black food pathways.

Cultivate interns researched each expert, developed questions, and led interviews while the folks from LightHouse worked to capture the best moments from the conversations and everyone’s time on location.

On this day, brothers Emmet and Ellis interviewed Ed Brooks who is the program coordinator at Yancey School Community Center. The interns learned that Mr. Brooks has deep roots in Albemarle County having attended Yancey as a student when the school was fully segregated, which makes his work both deeply personal and highly fulfilling. Mr. Brooks was recognized this year by the Albemarle-Charlottesville NAACP for his contributions to the community starting as a young man in 4H programs to his adult accomplishments, including interpreting at Monticello and Highland, serving on multiple boards, and stewarding the garden space at Yancey.

On this day, the interns met Dr. Leni Sorensen who is an ICONIC culinary historian who has done everything from writing books to being featured in Netflix’s award-winning series “High on the Hog” to leading the Obama family on tours of Monticello. Dr. Sorensen spoke with Laila about her own history, which included cofounding and performing in the all-female folk group The Womenfolk in the 1960s, and why our collective food history is deeply important.

CONGRATULATIONS to the entire Charlottesville Middle School Young Knights community—past and present—on the official, OFFICIAL, official grand opening of the new campus 🧡🖤🤍🩶

We were thrilled to be there for today’s celebration of the amazing work that has been done to bring more love, light, and learning to city school students in grades 6, 7, and 8.

VMDO architects led tours of the amazing space so we got to see the outdoors areas (INCLUDING WHERE THE NEW GARDEN WILL BE), the media center (which has a GORGEOUS desk made of wood from trees from the property), and the new gym (which includes an entire physical education hub with multiple fitness rooms.

Cultivate interns researched each expert, developed questions, and, this time, Markajah and Zeniah led the interview while the folks from LightHouse worked to capture the best moments from the conversation and everyone’s time on location.

On this day, the interns met Philip Cobbs who has stewarded his family’s land in Albemarle County for decades. He took our entire crew on a tour of Buck Island, the land where he grew up which includes a portion that is now owned by the County and is slated to become a public park. Mr. Cobbs also welcomed our interns and staff to hike his currently owns which was once part of Garland Farm and is now known as Spring Valley Farm.
