Last year a life changing event happened. Sunday September 18, 2016, began as a beautiful fall day, the sun was shining down on the bright Keswick fall leaves, the air was crisp and calm. Just after sunset, my phone rang, without hesitation I answered and received the most devastating call of my life. On the other end of the phone was a person telling me to rush to the UVA medical center as my son

was struck by not one but two cars, within less than 12 hours of this call I lost my first-born son. My son, his name was Rajesh Alante Gatewood. There are no words to express the devastation this has caused to myself, his two brothers, and the rest of my family. Losing Rajesh has proven to be a most difficult task. Although I search high and low for answers I realize that God blessed me with an angel and I still have many many fond, and fun memories of my son. Rajesh could make my entire soul laugh and Rajesh will never be forgotten. Rajesh was always active and family and friends were very important to him. One of his most favorite things to do was to play kickball at our family events or with friends. I decided the best way to keep my son’s memory alive would be to begin an annual scholarship outreach program which would aide in helping the youth of the Charlottesville and surrounding areas.
