Over the weekend CARS technicians alongside many other agencies held VEHEXT 2023. Of note: this was the first completely full VEHEXT since 2020! As always it was a pleasure to host so many subject matter experts to facilitate shared learning and collaboration between a wide array of departments. We look forward to continuing the tradition next year!

ENS Muller is also a Squad Operator with CARS and has helped teach at VEHEXT

On June 5th, CARS volunteer Jack Muller saw a call dispatched for a cardiac arrest on UVA grounds near the Rotunda. Jack is also a newly commissioned Ensign in the US Navy, having been in the NROTC while at UVA, and currently works on UVA grounds. Knowing their close proximity to the incident, ENS Muller grabbed another navy officer, their AED, and rushed to the incident location. They took over CPR from bystanders and applied the AED. It advised to shock the patient and they continued life-saving maneuvers until EMS arrived.

Due to their quick action, the patient regained a pulse after the shock and was breathing prior to EMS arrival. The patient survived the incident and is recovering well after surgery.

ENS Muller was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal for his quick action that saved the gentleman's life.
