We are still processing all of the amazing collaboration and passionate conversations between climate leaders at New York Climate Week last week.

A highlight was participating in a roundtable at GOALS HOUSE, “Amazon Gold: a Blind Spot for Philanthropy, Conservation, and Investment alike.” We were honored to bring together Indigenous leaders, policymakers, philanthropists, conservationists, business leaders and market actors to explore the complex issue of ASGM gold in the Amazon—and why it is so vital to look at it through a systems lens.

A special thank you to GOALS HOUSE, the Nia Tero Foundation, and the Mulokot Foundation. We look forward to keeping this conversation going on a national and international scale.

Twenty-five Amazon Gold Alliance (AGA) members travelled to Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios, Peru to witness firsthand the realities of Amazon gold mining. There, we met with Pure Earth, Alliance for Responsible Mining, and members of the Women’s Mining Network of Madre de Dios — including AMATAF — who are advancing mercury-free artisanal and small-scale gold mining while working to restore and reforest degraded land.

The experience created a rare opportunity to engage deeply with diverse perspectives and lived experiences, to imagine what less destructive mining could look like, and to better understand the immense complexity of these challenges from every angle.
