We’re still basking in the joy from our Summit in Lima. We have deep gratitude to every person who showed up, and especially to the Indigenous leaders who carried the heart of this gathering.

Twenty-five Amazon Gold Alliance (AGA) members travelled to Puerto Maldonado in Madre de Dios, Peru to witness firsthand the realities of Amazon gold mining. There, we met with Pure Earth, Alliance for Responsible Mining, and members of the Women’s Mining Network of Madre de Dios — including AMATAF — who are advancing mercury-free artisanal and small-scale gold mining while working to restore and reforest degraded land.

The experience created a rare opportunity to engage deeply with diverse perspectives and lived experiences, to imagine what less destructive mining could look like, and to better understand the immense complexity of these challenges from every angle.

The Amazon Gold Alliance’s first learning session of the year, fasciliated by Amazon Aid, explored how the EITI Standard is helping uncover the real owners behind extractive companies, and why that matters. From preventing corruption to protecting ecosystems, beneficial ownership transparency is a powerful tool for accountability.

With insights from global experts and real-world examples, this session highlighted how data can drive better governance across the Amazon and beyond. Read more on our website linked in our bio, or on our story.

Sometimes it can be hard to picture the scale in conversations revolving around environmental protection. Finding other ways to visualize the world-wide impact is crucial to demonstrating the importance, and the Guardian does a fantastic job with this interactive map resource. Whether you are looking at gold, biodiversity, or it’s other features, it makes it impossible to deny the scale.

Amazon Aid is showing up on the world stage to make sure that the Amazon’s story is heard loud and clear. Our focus: the hidden crisis of gold mining and its impact on people and the forest. Our work is rooted in collective action– proof that when we act together, we can spark the kind of change the world so desperately needs. Amazon Aid and members of its Amazon Gold Alliance are at the Minamata COP where a robust agenda is bringing together country representatives and civil society to focus on mercury pollution and its human and environmental impacts. As part of the event, the AGA’s Pressure Campaign contributed to the screening of the documentary “Amazonia: The New Minamata?” which highlights the impacts of mercury contamination on Indigenous Peoples of Brazil’s Tapajós River.

Going to the Minamata COP? Join the Knowledge Lab inspired by the Environmental Investigation Agency-US report, "Traffickers Leave No Stone Unturned."
