Who We Are

4-H’ers across the nation are responding to challenges every day in their communities and their world. With a rich history and an expansive network reaching every corner of the country, 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization. More than 6 million 4-H youth in urban neighborhoods, suburban schoolyards and rural farming communities stand out among their peers: building

revolutionary opportunities and implementing community-wide change at an early age. Proven Results

The Positive Development of Youth: Comprehensive Findings from the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development is the first-ever research project of its kind. The decade-long study, completed by a team of researchers at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, Medford, MA, is influencing research and practice around the world. The report shows that 4-H youth excel beyond their peers. 4-H'ers are about:
◦4X more likely to make contributions to their communities (Grades 7-12);
◦2X more likely to be civically active (Grades 8-12);
◦2X more likely to make healthier choices (Grade 7);
◦2X more likely to participate in Science, Engineering and Computer Technology programs during out-of-school time (Grades 10 – 12); and
◦4-H girls are 2X more likely (Grade 10) and nearly 3X more likely (Grade 12) to take part in science programs compared to girls in other out-of-school time activities. Unparalleled Reach and Scope

With 540,000 volunteers, 3,500 professionals, and more than 60 million alumni, the 4-H movement supports young people from elementary school through high school with programs designed to shape future leaders and innovators. Fueled by research-driven programming, 4-H'ers engage in hands-on learning activities in the areas of science, citizenship and healthy living. Leading by Example

The caring support of adult volunteers and mentors inspires young people in 4-H to work collaboratively, take the lead on their own projects and set and achieve goals with confidence. 4-H’ers chart their own course, explore important issues and define their place in the world. 4-H’ers stand up for themselves and their communities. These pivotal experiences build a foundation of leadership and skills for success in their future careers. (4-H.org)

Join us this Saturday for our annual 4-H Livestock and Home Arts Show held during the Grace Church Historic Farm Tour in Keswick, Virginia! It is a full day of family fun, youth exhibits, and community celebration!

Come cheer on our talented 4-H youth from Albemarle and Fluvanna as they showcase their livestock and home arts projects in one of the most beautiful venues in our area. Rabbit Hopping begins at 9:00 a.m., Home Arts opens around 10:30 a.m., and the large animal show begins at 12:00 p.m.

Enjoy pony rides, kids’ games, local organizations like the Piedmont Master Gardeners, live music, art vendors, delicious food, tours of the historic church, and an organ performance at 3:00 p.m. The Country Fair is free to attend, and tickets are also available to tour local farms throughout the day.

Our county 4-H livestock show has proudly been hosted by the Grace Church Historic Farm Tour since 2016, and we are incredibly grateful to Grace Episcopal Church for supporting local youth through this event and through the Corky Shackelford 4-H Youth Development Scholarship.

Will the rabbits hop? Come find out! We would love to see you there!

Only 1 day left to donate to our Vehicle Fundraiser!
https://crowdfund.vt.edu/DoubleOurMiles

Albemarle Cooperative Extension is growing, especially our 4‑H Youth Program, and one six‑passenger vehicle can only take us so far. Thanks to Virginia Tech Giving Day and generous supporters, we’ve raised $30,000 of our $40,000 goal! This strong momentum reflects a shared belief in the power of research-based education and community connection. We are seeking the final $10,000 by May 1, 2026, to purchase a second state vehicle and meet this growing demand.
Help us by sharing our fundraiser with friends, family, and local organizations who believe in the work that we do. Let's Go!!

Help Albemarle Cooperative Extension raise the final $10,000 for a second vehicle to expand youth programs & research-based education.

We’re almost there! 🍀
https://crowdfund.vt.edu/DoubleOurMiles

Our crowdfunding campaign is in its final stretch, and we need your help to cross the finish line. We have just over $8,000 left to raise before our May 1st deadline.

Every contribution—big or small—brings us one step closer to making this vision of a second vehicle a reality. If you’ve been considering supporting us, now is the time!

Please consider donating and sharing this with your network. Together, we can make it happen.
