Though a couple of weeks have passed since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, it has been at the forefront of our minds as Women In Medical Sciences. We have been processing this occurrence and reflecting on how to respond both in deed & word in a way that is in line with our unceasing endeavor to work towards our ultimate purpose (as found in Article II of the WIMS Constitution):

“Our goals are to provide support and guidance for women in the field of biomedical research at the University of Virginia; to create and foster a community and network to support women in this field; to create awareness of issues affecting career development and success; to centralize resources available for career and personal development; and to promote service opportunities outside of the University community for young scientists. In addition, we work closely with other groups at the University of Virginia to extend our assistance and support to the work of empowering other underrepresented minorities.”

We believe bodily autonomy is a human right, and we stand in solidarity with all that are threatened by this harmful decision. We recognize that this risk extends to all people who may become pregnant, not just those who identify as women. We also acknowledge the potential for harm is greatest for black, indigenous, & other people of color and/or trans individuals & other members of the LGBTQIA+ community in addition to the ongoing dangers they already face.

As WIMS, we are committed to being an organization in which people feel safe and welcome. In addition to offering our ongoing emotional support, we are currently planning a session in which we will gather to discuss our resources and determine what we can do to help our local community. Above all, let’s take care of each other.

Happy WIMS Wednesday! We are very excited to share our interview with Dr. Melina R. Kibbe, Dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. We are proud to have such an inspiring physician-scientist as a Dean!

Dr. Kibbe is an outstanding clinician, researcher, and highly respected educator. She joined UNC in 2016 when she became the first woman to serve as the Chair of the Department of Surgery and a key member of the UNC Health senior leadership team. Currently, as dean and chief health affairs officer, Dr. Kibbe is leading the UVA School of Medicine faculty in all four missions, including clinical strategy and growth, expansion of research in collaboration with other UVA schools, and the promotion of educational programs of the highest caliber, and developing partnerships with our community.

Our Story

Women in Medical Sciences at UVA is a group of grad students and post docs who support the inclusion and advancement of women in medical sciences. We create and sponsor events to encourage personal and professional development and science outreach in the community. We welcome anyone who shares our mission (including men). Our events are largely catered to all graduate students and post docs, but have the added benefit of a safe forum to discuss women’s issues in our field. We are always excited to meet other people who share our mission!
