Yellow Door Foundation Charity provides apartment lodging for families with a child fighting cancer or undergoing an organ transplant at UVA Children's hospital.

The Yellow Door Foundation understands that when a child is diagnosed with cancer, or needs an organ transplant, the entire family must shift away from the life they know in order to seek out the best treatments possible. This often means relocating for an extended period of time. For families with an immunocompromised child being treated at UVA Children’s hospital in Charlottesville, VA, Yellow Door provides fully-equipped individual apartments, FREE of charge, for the duration of the child’s treatment. We become their home away from home,
in the best environment possible to ensure positive outcomes. Families stay with us an average of 71 days, over 100 days for cancer families. Affording alternate lodging for that length of time is not feasible for the majority of families. Thanks to support from our community and beyond, Yellow Door is able to relieve that financial burden, while providing hope and healing for patients, siblings, parents and grandparents during the toughest times of their lives.

Today, Central Virginia went gold. 💛

From schools and businesses to families, community organizations, and local events, our region showed up for children and families facing childhood cancer.

And while today is a day to wear gold, the need doesn't end when September does.

Childhood cancer families need support through the long hospital stays, the difficult treatments, the waiting, the uncertainty—and often long after treatment ends.

That's why the Community of Care matters.

We are incredibly proud to stand alongside the 14 other organizations that make up United 4 Gold, each providing a different piece of the support families need.

Today was about awareness.
Today was about visibility.
Today was about reminding families:

You are seen.
You are supported.
You are not alone.

Thank you, Central Virginia, for going gold. 💛

💛 SEPTEMBER 23 — UNITED 4 GOLD DAY 💛
Tomorrow, Central Virginia, we’re asking you to show up in gold.

Wear gold.
Display a gold ribbon.
Add some gold to your business or storefront.
Wear gold to school.
Share a photo.
Talk about childhood cancer.

However you choose to participate, let families facing childhood cancer know:
We see you.
We stand with you.
You are not alone.

United 4 Gold Day is the centerpiece of a month-long campaign bringing visibility to the incredible Community of Care already supporting Central Virginia families.

Fifteen local organizations. One shared mission: making sure families facing childhood cancer know that support is here.

This isn't a fundraiser.
It's a show of solidarity.

So today, Central Virginia, let's go gold. 💛

The Numbers: The numbers are hard to read.

Approximately 15,000 children and adolescents ages 0–19 are diagnosed with cancer in the United States every year.

Leukemia accounts for about 28% of childhood cancer cases, while brain and central nervous system tumors account for about 25%.

There is good news, too. Death rates have fallen by more than 70% since 1970, thanks to advances in treatment and clinical trials.

But the journey doesn't necessarily end when treatment does.

Approximately two-thirds of childhood cancer survivors experience at least one chronic health condition later in life, often related to the aggressive treatments that saved their lives.

These aren't just numbers.
They are children.
They are parents.
They are siblings.
They are families whose lives are changed forever by a diagnosis.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we're choosing to see the whole picture—and to stand beside the families living it.

A Community of Care: United 4 Gold

A childhood cancer diagnosis changes everything.

And while no one can make that journey easy, a strong community can make sure families don't have to navigate it alone.

This year, Yellow Door board members Val Piper and Jessie Keller set out to connect the incredible resources available to Central Virginia families facing childhood cancer.

That vision became United 4 Gold—a coalition of 15 organizations working in different ways to support the same families.

Together, this Community of Care provides housing, meals, financial assistance, camp experiences, educational support, emotional care, and so much more.

The Reality Behind the Ribbon: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 💛

You’ll see gold ribbons. You’ll see stories of courage, hope, and triumph.

And we should celebrate every single one.

But there is another side of childhood cancer that is harder to see.

It’s the long days in the hospital. The endless testing. The waiting for blood counts to be high enough to continue treatment. The unexpected ER visits. The sleepless nights. The financial strain. The missed work. The siblings who are trying to understand why life suddenly looks so different.

Cancer affects an entire family.

There are moments of incredible sunshine and joy—but they are often surrounded by days that are exhausting, uncertain, and heartbreaking.
This month, we’re honoring all of it.

The children fighting. The parents showing up every day. The siblings, grandparents, friends, doctors, nurses, and communities who walk alongside them.

And we’re reminding families that they don't have to walk this road alone.

💛 This September, we are United 4 Gold.

Wishlist Wednesday: Every Item You Give Helps a Family

Over the past year, families have found comfort, stability, and a place to stay through the Yellow Door Foundation. Behind every family's stay are the everyday items that make our apartments feel like home.

As we continue preparing for the busy months ahead, we invite you to participate in our final Wishlist Wednesday of this supply drive.

Every bottle of dish soap, box of trash bags, set of towels, or cleaning supply you donate helps us welcome the next family through our doors. It's a simple but meaningful way to support children receiving life-saving medical care and the loved ones who never leave their side.

Thank you for helping us ensure our apartments are ready for every family who needs us.

Wishlist Wednesday: It's the Little Things That Make a House Feel Like Home

When families arrive at a Yellow Door apartment, they often do so with little more than an overnight bag and a heart full of worry.

The last thing they should have to think about is buying dish soap, toilet paper, trash bags, or laundry detergent.

That's why we're asking for your help this Wishlist Wednesday. These everyday essentials may seem small, but they provide comfort, convenience, and one less thing for families to worry about while they focus on their child's care.

As we head into the busy fall season, we're working to restock our apartments so every family is welcomed with a clean, comfortable place to call home.

Thank you for making these simple acts of kindness possible.

Wishlist Wednesday: Help Us Restock Our Yellow Door Homes

As families prepare for a new school year and the arrival of fall, we're asking our community to help us prepare our Yellow Door homes for the families who will need them in the months ahead.

Our apartments are more than just a place to stay—they're a home away from home for families whose children are receiving life-saving medical care. Because our apartments are used year-round, many everyday household items need to be replaced regularly.

This week's Wishlist Wednesday is a simple way to make a meaningful difference. Whether it's laundry detergent, paper towels, kitchen supplies, or cleaning products, every item donated helps us welcome a new family with comfort and care.
Your support allows us to focus our resources where they're needed most—keeping families together during their child's medical journey.

Thank you for helping us open doors to hope, one household item at a time.
