Recent research from the National Bureau of Economic Research indicates that the majority of recent college graduates end up underemployed (in jobs that do not require a degree). These outcomes differ based on certain factors such as college major, gender, race and disability.

It did not mention first-generation status or low-income background, but recent research from the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success indicates that first-generation students are more likely to be underemployed than their peers, but not by much.

There seems to be a disparity not only in underemployment, but also in the industries they land in out of college compared to those of similar age without a 4-year degree, as well as by amount of pay.
