Join us for our October Second Sunday Speaker Series!

Ghostlore: Albemarle's Historic Haints

Ghost stories are a form of folklore that historians have been slow to take seriously. Told and retold across generations, they preserve real people and events that the documentary record lost; they can also distort, flattening a life into a convenient archetype or muddling historic details. Join Dr. Lynn Rainville as she shares stories from her forthcoming book Ghostlore: Virginia's Haunted History (University of Virginia Press, 2027), with a focus on the supernatural in Charlottesville and Albemarle.

Dr. Lynn Rainville • Anthropological Historian • Curator • Institutional Consultant • Uncovering Virginia's Hidden History • Website • Forthcoming Book Winter 2027, Ghostlore: Virginia's Haunted History (UVA Press). Available Books: Virginia and the Great War • African American Cemeteries • Sweet Briar College History • Invisible Founders

It’s been an eventful September! Our inaugural Second Sunday Speaker Series sparked lively discussion as Rob Gowen shared his experiences thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. On the annual United Way Day of Caring, a wonderful team from UVA’s Office of Environmental Health & Safety spruced up our site and painted some of our wooden boats- our favorite being the FriendShip. Today we are hosting a wedding and are honored to be part of a lovely couple’s journey. May all of us find joy in proceeding on and enjoy many happy explorations this autumn!
