✨Rotarian Spotlight: Dave Segars✨

For 27 years, Dave has brought the heart of an engineer and the spirit of a true servant leader to our Rotary club.

A retired engineer, Dave was drawn to Rotary by the camaraderie and the chance to make a real difference through international service. He's seen what's possible when people show up for each other and for their communities, and nearly three decades later, he's still all in.

As a past president, Dave has helped shape this club from the inside out, and he's never stopped looking for ways to make it better. He's always ready to recruit new members, and he's been a steady mentor to so many Rotarians just getting started.

When he's not in a meeting, you'll likely find him out on the water kayaking, hiking a new trail, out on his bike, or off traveling.

We're so grateful to have a changemaker like Dave in our club. Here's to many more years of service together!

🌟 ROTARIAN SPOTLIGHT: Whit Hollowell 🌟
This week, we're shining a light on one of our longtime members, Whit Hollowell!
Whit is a retired CEO of an electric cooperative and has been a proud Rotarian for 22 years. When asked what drew him to Rotary, his answer was simple: he wanted to meet new people and find meaningful ways to help others. More than two decades later, that mission still drives him every day. Whit gives back regularly by volunteering at The Center at Belvedere/ When he's not serving others, you'll likely find Whit exploring the world; he's an avid traveler, both domestically and internationally, always eager for the next adventure. Thank you, Whit, for 22 years of friendship, service, and leadership. 👏

📢 Rotary Guest Speaker Announcement! 📢

Join us on Tuesday, August 11th at 5:30 PM at Burton's Grill as we welcome our guest speaker, Elwood Bernard Boone III!

Mr. Boone is a seasoned healthcare executive with more than two decades of experience as a hospital President and CEO. He currently serves as President of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, a role he stepped into in June 2025. Before that, he spent 13 years (2012–2025) as President of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he led the hospital to Magnet designation, secured $54 million in capital investment for surgical and ICU expansion, and partnered with the City of Virginia Beach to establish the VB Strong Center, supporting those impacted by the 2019 tragedy at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.

Over his career with HCA and Sentara Health, Boone has led major capital projects and strategic growth initiatives across Virginia, Texas, and New Hampshire. He holds a Master's in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor's degree from Morehouse College, is board-certified in Health Care Management, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

His civic contributions include appointments to the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors and the Virginia Board of Medical Assistance Services, along with recent honors such as the ACHE Senior-Level Central VA Regent Award and recognition as a 2025 Virginia Black Business Leader Award winner.

A fourth-generation healthcare provider, Mr. Boone comes from a family with deep roots in medicine — and now shares that legacy with his wife, Dr. Dorothy M. French, and their three adult children.

✨ Rotarian Spotlight: Manoj Velumani ✨

For the past year and a half, Manoj has brought something truly special to our Rotary club the mindset of a builder and the heart of a servant.

As an entrepreneur and technology leader, Manoj was drawn to Rotary by the power of community service, locally and internationally. He's seen firsthand what happens when passionate people come together to solve real problems, and he's all in. 💚

Manoj is a self-proclaimed tech and AI evangelist, and he genuinely believes that technology, used the right way, can be one of the greatest forces for good in the world. Community development sits at the core of everything he does,and he brings that energy to every project, every meeting, and every conversation.

We're so grateful to have a changemaker like Manoj in our corner. Here's to many more years of service together! 🙌

We kicked off the month by celebrating our Rotary Club's journey together! 👏
✨ We honored Dave Segars for his outstanding leadership as our outgoing President; thank you for your dedication and service! What a year of Rotary service!
🏆 Congratulations to John McCauley on receiving another Paul Harris Award, recognizing his continued commitment to Rotary's mission of service above self.
🤝 We proudly installed our new President, Bonita Patton, officiated by Assistant District Governor Chris Elliott. We're excited for the year ahead under her leadership!

✨ Member Spotlight: Melanie Crawford ✨

We are so thrilled to welcome Melanie to our Rotary family! Just a few months in, and she's already making her presence known in the best way.

Melanie found her way to us through the incredible work our club does right here at home and around the world, and we are so glad she did. 💙

When she's not serving as a financial advisor, you'll find Melanie soaking up the energy at music festivals, chasing adventures on hiking trails, exploring new destinations around the globe, or hunting down the perfect antique or one-of-a-kind treasure. And of course spending precious time with her grandbabies. 🥰

Speaking of music… stay tuned! Melanie is already planning to bring her passion for live music to our upcoming events. We can't wait to see what she has in store! 🎶

✨ Rotarian Spotlight: Franklin Herbert ✨

We love shining a light on our newer members, and Franklin Herbert is one we are SO glad to have in our Rotary family! 🙌

Franklin joined our club just 7 months ago, but don't let that fool you — his heart for service runs deep. Motivated by his faith in Christ, Franklin came to Rotary with one mission: to serve his community in every way possible. That kind of spirit is exactly what makes our club special.

By day, Franklin is a Post Doctoral Research Associate, bringing intellectual curiosity and dedication to his work that clearly spills over into everything else he does. When he's not in the lab, you might find him behind a camera 📷 capturing beautiful moments, in the kitchen cooking up something delicious 🍳, or getting lost in music 🎵. And here's a little secret, Franklin has a hidden talent as a barista! ☕ Someone get this man behind a coffee & tea station at our next meeting!
