Members of The Rotary Club of Charlottesville attended as proud sponsors the 2025 MLK Day Brunch presented by Gamma Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This was the second annual event with keynote speaker Juandiego Wade, Mayor of City of Charlottesville, celebrating the legacy of the famous Alpha Brother, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work as a civil rights leader and visionary for a more equitable world.

This event was hosted as a fundraiser to support scholarships for youth attending the Albermarle County and Charlottesville City Schools and it was interesting to find out that last year's fundraising efforts resulted in scholarships to several local high school seniors.

The fraternity is still accepting donations to raise $50,000 for future scholarship recipients and we encourage everyone to contribute.

This Tuesday the Rotary Club of Charlottesville rang the bells to raise funds for the Salvation Army. Customers of the Kroger at the Barracks Road Shopping Center were quite generous and our bell ringers enjoyed fellowship while helping our community. Thanks to club member and past Club President Joe Cantu for organizing our Club’s participation and to the Salvation Army for providing this opportunity for service.

What an amazing, uplifting club meeting we had yesterday! Our District Governor Amelia Stansell graced us with her vibrant, upbeat presence to share inspiration and Rotary magic with all of us. Amelia is a living example of what it means to be a Rotarian, to move with purpose and to serve with integrity.

As a culmination to the evening, we also inducted 8 new proud Rotaract members! We are so honored to have you serve alongside us and you are all making a difference in the world!

When Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc. says they need supplies, we provide! Loaves & Fishes serves over 11,000 of our neighbors each month and we were informed that personal care products are much needed and very welcome! Some of the items that people and families in need struggle to afford, include: diapers (in all sizes), baby formula, baby wipes, female hygiene products and toilet paper. Everyone is encouraged to donate any of those items at any time.

Thank you to all our club members who took the time to personally shop for items or donated funds towards our trip to Costco!

This week at our club meeting we welcomed another member - Ashley Ferguson!

Ashley was a Global Grant Scholar and she will now chair the local selection committee for the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship.

Between 2017-2019 Ashley conducted research on the contribution of altered mitochondrial dynamics to cancer metabolismin a lab at the University of Cambridge and her research was funded by a Rotary Global Grant. Since returning to Charlottesville she has started training in the medical field with the goal of making her scientific research skills more directly useful to patients.

Welcome, Ashley! We are so proud to have you!

We are so pleased to report that 6 out of 8 of our 2022-23 scholarship recipients graduated from St. Dennis Vocational Training Center - Nkumba, Uganda in December 2023, and two, Nicholas Lubwama and Francis Kisitu, are continuing their studies and are awaiting a 2023-24 scholarship.

St. Dennis Vocational Training Centre was established in 2013 by Rev. Fr. Francis Ssengendo with a mission of producing God-fearing citizens who are law abiding and job-creators for a better nation. Without employable skills, majority of Ugandans must remain poor. They always wake up to work for daily food and very few of them are able to save for a more decent life. In reality, we are not poor, we are simply jobless. The education in the country is too theoretical. Students do not train for work with their hands. That is why the establishment of St. Dennis Vocational Training Centre was a timely response to this urgent need for skills. The training Centre belongs entirely to the Catholic Church of Kampala Archdiocese. The work of building it up is in the hands of the Board of Governors.

We are so excited to donate $1,000 to the Piedmont Family YMCA. The funds will be used to help cover tuition charges for the 2024 YMCA Blue Ridge Leaders School. Rotarian Bonita Patton who is the Piedmont Family YMCA VP of Youth Development/Diversity, Equity & Inclusion accepted the check from Rotary Club of Charlottesville President Ed Kent and Rotary Club Local Service Committee member Manoj Velumani.

Since its creation in 1922 Blue Ridge Leaders’ School has retained its basic philosophy of training teens to be leaders in all aspects of YMCA physical education. The purpose of Blue Ridge Leaders’ School is teen leadership development through YMCA health and physical education. Blue Ridge Leaders’ School is not a camp. Rather it is a physical education training school profoundly structured with high standards of Behavior, Physical Participation, and Individual Performance.

Leader's Clubs are the lifeblood of BRLS. The success of BRLS depends on the mission and lessons of the school being taken back home and implemented in the communities in which YMCA leaders live and serve.

What a wonderful event at Montalto on this gorgeous sunny day! A special THANK YOU to everyone involved in the organization, our panel speakers, our country's "third President" who hasn't aged a day 😄 and, of course, all our guests.

We had meaningful conversations about the relationship between the Charlottesville community and the University of Virginia and how we can all contribute toward a more symbiotic relationship between the two.

Host: Ed Kent, President of The Rotary Club of Charlottesville

Panel moderator: Chris Elliott, Assistant Dean at UVA's McIntire School of Commerce and past President of the Rotary Club of Charlottesville

Panelists:
- Charlottesville Mayor Juandiego Wade
- Ben Allen: Executive Director of UVA's Equity Center
- Harold Folley: Senior Supervising Organizer, Legal Aid Justice
- Christine Nardi, Strategic Advisor, Center for Nonprofit Excellence

It was great to see the familiar faces of members from The Rotary Club of Albemarle, The Rotary Club of Blue Ridge Mountains, and our District Governor Rene Laws!
