That's how much food stays out of the landfill every time we rescue a meal.

Last year that added up to over 1,140,000 meals rescued here in Charlotte. Food that was headed for the trash, delivered to neighbors who needed it instead.

Thursday night is going to be a good one.

We're gathering to celebrate the people who made 1,140,000 meals possible here in Charlotte. June 11, 4:30 to 6:30 PM, at the Canteen at Camp North End.

Heavy appetizers, cash bar, a raffle loaded with prizes, and a room full of people who love this city.

That night we're honoring Quality Data Systems, TowneBank, Karen and Paul Dougherty, Sanctuary Bistro, and four food rescue drivers who show up every week without fail. If you've volunteered, donated, or just rooted for us, this night is for you.

Look what the Deloitte team did to our space.

They came out, rolled up their sleeves, and got to work. Fresh cement in the driveway so our rescue vehicle parks clean instead of dealing with mud every day. A full interior paint job that makes our workspace feel like somewhere worth showing up to.

Every rescue starts with someone who decided their food was worth more than the dumpster.

We've seen it come from a catering company after a big corporate event. A bakery with day-old bread. A grocery store with produce that's a day from its sell-by date.

All of it good. All of it feeding real people in Charlotte.

For most restaurants, caterers, and corporate kitchens, the answer is the trash. Not because anyone wants that, but because there hasn't been an easy way to do something better.

Every week, our restaurant and catering partners in Charlotte call us when they have meals left over. We pick them up and deliver them, same day, to neighbors in need. It costs the partner nothing. It means everything to the neighbor.

That’s the loop: Rescue. Deliver. Feed.
