Some stories need to be told because the people living them have carried the weight for far too long.
On September 30, the Family Child Care Center Enrichment Foundation premiered its new documentary, “After the Storm: A Child Care Crisis Revealed,” at the Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa in Asheville, North Carolina.
Led by the Family Child Care & Center Enrichment Foundation, Vantoinette Savage and presented alongside Home Grown, LISC, Dogwood Health Trust, and other partners and advocates, the evening brought people together around a reality that family child care educators and home-based educators know all too well: when crisis hits a community, child care is not on the sidelines. It is part of the infrastructure that holds families together and helps communities recover.
“After the Storm” brings that reality to the screen, illuminating both the vulnerability of our child care system and the extraordinary resilience of the educators who continue opening their doors, caring for children, supporting families, and rebuilding alongside their communities.
There is something powerful about seeing these experiences documented and preserved. Too often, the stories of family child care educators are discussed through numbers, shortages, and statistics. This film reminds us that behind every number is a person, a family, a home, a business, and a community depending on care.
Congratulations to Ms. Vantoinette Savage and the Family Child Care Center Enrichment Foundation on this important first screening and for continuing to ensure that the experiences of family child care and home-based educators are not only heard, but seen.
The storm may reveal the crisis. The stories reveal the people who keep showing up through it.
