Kelechi Nwosu, a Road to Hire alumnus and now a Software Engineer at Microsoft, has advice for college students searching for an internship: cast a wide net. Microsoft was always his dream company, but he didn’t land an internship there until his fourth year. Along the way, the experiences he gained at other companies gave him insight into different work environments and built the foundation that helped him get to where he is today.

Bonus tip: your resume is more than your grades and major. Extracurriculars show recruiters the person behind the application and help you build a connection in the interview room.

Cast a wide net and make the most of every opportunity!

"Sometimes all you need is someone to encourage you to take that first step."

That's how Joel Zarsah, a senior at West Mecklenburg High School, summed up what being part of CIS, TRIO, DifferenceMakers, and Road to Hire has meant for him. Earlier this fall, Communities In Schools-Charlotte and Road to Hire celebrated a new partnership that will reach all 9, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, high schools where we are present. The moments that stayed with everyone in the room, though, came from Joel and fellow senior Daisy Millard, who each took the podium to tell their own stories.

College won’t hand you a community. You have to go find it!

Mariah Allen-Jones, a Road to Hire alumna and now a Next Step Advisor with Carolina College Advising Corps, has a message for first-year college students: put yourself out there. Make new friends, resist the urge to stay in your dorm, and look for the clubs and organizations where your people are. In her words, it helps you grow both professionally and personally.

Today at West Mecklenburg High School, Communities In Schools-Charlotte and Road to Hire came together with students, leaders and community partners to celebrate a new partnership focused on helping young adults take their next steps after graduation.

Our organizations already support many of the same students and communities at different stages of their journey. This partnership creates a more connected path forward across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools we both serve.

As one West Mecklenburg High School student who has participated in both programs shared:

“Coming to high school, I did not know what I wanted to do with my life; joining these programs has helped shape me in the best way possible. When I joined CIS/Trio during my sophomore year, I realized it was a place where people actually care, want the best for you and help you accomplish more in life. One of the experiences that stuck with me is Road to Hire’s Summer U program. It helped me step out of my comfort zone, build up my confidence and learn to ask for help when needed.”

For more than 40 years, CIS-Charlotte has surrounded students and families with support throughout their K-12 journey and beyond. Road to Hire builds on that foundation by supporting young adults through college and into meaningful careers.

Together, we can help more young adults move forward with the relationships, resources and opportunities they need to shape their futures.

Our inaugural Alumni Leadership Council is officially underway!

The council brings together 15 alumni across Road to Hire programs, careers, and experiences. Last week, our council members gathered with our CEO, Dr. Monique Perry-Graves, to connect, share their perspectives, and kick off this new chapter.

At Road to Hire, opportunities to grow and lead don't stop when a program ends. The Alumni Leadership Council creates a new space for alumni voices to remain part of our community and help inform what comes next.

As you set new goals for your academic and career journey this school year, remember the people you surround yourself with can make a difference!

Darwin Arreaza, one of our College Class of 2017 alumni and now a Senior Engineer at Red Ventures, has one piece of advice for the R2H community: find your person. Find someone you trust to be honest with you, advocate for you, and be there when you need support.

For Darwin, that person was a mentor he could turn to for both professional guidance and the moments in life when he simply needed someone to talk to.

As you build those relationships along your own journey, you might just become that person for someone else one day!

A new school year might come with a plan, but some of the best opportunities can be the ones you didn’t plan for!

Naomi Tellez-Duran, one of our alumni and now a Senior Associate at RVO Health, has some advice for our community: be willing to say yes to the unexpected. Take the class, go to the interest meeting, or apply for the opportunity that feels slightly out of reach.

During this school year, let your goals guide you without fear of discovering something new along the way.

A new academic year brings new opportunities and more advice from our Road to Hire community!

Kodi Okeke, one of our juniors at Fayetteville State University, knows that showing up is about more than just being present. It’s about being prepared, putting your best foot forward, and taking a chance on opportunities outside your comfort zone.

His advice to the R2H community this school year: show up for yourself. When you do, others will be more likely to show up for you, too.

As you step into a new academic year, remember that every opportunity starts with being willing to take that first step.
