It has been truly heartwarming to see the support for the Dan Wade Memorial Scholarship during our inaugural year. We will never forget the encouragement and continued sense of community as we grow this program♥️.

This year’s scholarship recipient took a bold leap - from an 18-year career as an automotive technician to fully pursuing his passion for brewing. Introduced to craft beer in 2014, he dove in headfirst during the pandemic, teaching himself, building his own setup, and constantly refining his craft with help from the local brewing community.

After years of dedication, he made the jump, landed a role at NoDa Brewing, and hasn’t looked back since.

His journey is a true testament to passion, resilience, and betting on yourself.

Together with our friends at Wooden Robot Brewery and NoDa Brewing Company, The board of the Dan Wade Memorial Scholarship is proud to announce the 2026 recipient. This scholarship honors Dan’s legacy by supporting the next generation of brewers and celebrating the love and dedication to the craft, as well as the community, that meant so much to him. This year’s winner will be announced on Dan’s birthday, Friday, March 20th, during a Cheers to Dan celebration from 6–9 PM at Wooden Robot Brewery’s South End location. Join us as we come together to carry forward Dan’s passion and celebrate this year’s incredible recipient!

We’re thrilled with the applicants and grateful to those of you who took the time to submit a personal statement, as well as the many wonderful people and businesses who have donated to help us get to this point!

If you applied, keep an eye on your inbox 👀 — selected candidates will receive an email within the next week or two to schedule an interview.

No need to be! We’re keeping the celebrations going by opening up application submissions for the Dan Wade Memorial Scholarship!

If you’re passionate about beer and brewing, we want to hear from you. Send us your personal statement telling us why you’d be a great fit to receive the scholarship and share your story of what drives your love for the craft.

📝 We will be accepting personal statements until January 1st and then will contact you for an interview if we think you could be the right fit.

Please join us on Wednesday October 22nd at 📍Wooden Robot Brewery from 6:00pm to 9:00pm to celebrate the return of Cosmic Ballet! This beer has been brewed to celebrate the life of our guy and this year, proceeds will go to benefit our scholarship!

Dan Wade had an undeniable passion for brewing and teaching others about the craft beer industry. He started as a home brewer and furthered his education all the way to receiving a Masters in Brewing from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Using this knowledge, he co-founded and opened Wooden Robot Brewery in Charlotte, NC in 2015. He loved nothing more than to share his passion with others and bring people together. Dan believed everyone deserved a seat at the table.

Though his life was tragically cut short in 2024, to carry on his legacy, the Wade family and some wonderful friends, have established the Dan Wade Memorial Scholarship. Working together with Appalachian State, the scholarship funds will sponsor at least one student annually to the App State Summer Brewing Short Course. This program is designed to give aspiring brewers access to continued education, training, and help deepen the knowledge of brewing science and industry operations.

The scholarship will be open to anyone over the age of 21, but is specifically geared towards people already within the craft beer industry looking for a change or growth and the advance home brewer considering starting a business.

We are very excited about the formation of the scholarship and the opportunities it will bring.
