We got to sit down with Dawn Hilton-Williams, founder of Power is Giving, and hear the story of how it all started.

It began with her daughter Nadia, then 14 years old. Nadia won an essay contest and got to meet and hit tennis balls with Maria Sharapova. Wanting to thank her, Nadia spent months going door to door in their neighborhood raising money for one of Maria's causes, collecting donations from tennis families, friends, and a few corporate donors along the way.

She raised just under $6,000. Tennis Channel matched it, bringing the total to nearly $12,000. When they surprised Maria with the gift, she was in tears.

That moment turned into free community fitness and tennis programs, and eventually grew into Power is Giving, the organization we spent a day with at their EDD Fit & Fuel Tennis Camp.

Power is Giving was founded in 2016 by Dawn Hilton-Williams and her daughter Nadia Hilton Adams. Hilton-Williams, who goes by The Vegucator, is an author, columnist, and wellness equity advocate with certifications in whole-food, plant-based nutrition from eCornell and nonprofit leadership from Duke University. The organization describes its mission plainly: equip disproportionately impacted communities with evidence-based tools that support the prevention, arrest, and reversal of lifestyle-driven chronic illness.

The programs are free. The education is physician and expert-led. And the delivery is, by design, culturally aligned, meaning the food tastes like something people actually want to eat, the spaces are places people already trust, and the framing does not ask attendees to abandon their culture in order to take care of their health.
