What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr (also known as Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a mandatory charity due before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is required from every Muslim—young or old, male or female—who has the means to give.

Purpose of Zakat al-Fitr
1. Purifies the fast by compensating for any shortcomings or mistakes made during Ramadan.
2. Provides for those in need, ensuring they can also enjoy the joy of Eid.

What to Give

The original form of Zakat al-Fitr is a portion of staple food, but today it is commonly given as a monetary amount to simplify distribution. The amount is based on the value of approximately 3 kg (or 6.5 lbs) of food, and many scholars and organizations estimate it to be $15 per person.

Who Must Pay

Every Muslim who can afford it should pay Zakat al-Fitr for:
• Themselves
• Their dependents (children, spouse, and anyone under their care)

When to Give It

Zakat al-Fitr must reach those in need before the Eid prayer. That means it is not enough to simply make the payment on Eid day—it must be distributed by then.

If you are donating through MEC, please make sure to submit your payment by Thursday at the latest, so we have enough time to ensure it reaches eligible families before Eid.

Summary
• Obligatory for every capable Muslim
• Given on behalf of each person in your household
• $10–$15 per person
• Must reach the needy before the Eid prayer
• Deadline for MEC donations: Thursday

Let us fulfill this important act of worship and make sure our brothers and sisters can celebrate Eid.

Muslim Education Center is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and welcomes all to apply and volunteer without regard to age, color, race, religion, gender, genetic information, or national origin. We also encourage protected veterans and individuals with disabilities to apply/enroll.
