The Charlotte Trail of History (TOH) is a privately funded nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporat

ion that identifies, raises funds, selects nationally recognized bronze sculptors, and installs life-size statues commemorating the lives of important people to the history of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. The bronze statues are dedicated and placed on the Little Sugar Creek Greenway between Morehead and East Seventh Streets between Kenilworth Road and Kings Drive. All statues on the Trail of History have been privately funded and represent a diverse and exciting series of individuals, including Civil Rights Leader Julius Chambers, Catawba Chief Haigler, Thad Tate, and Dr. Annie Alexander. The goal of each statue site is to contribute to the experience of public space by attracting pedestrians, improving and animating public space, expressing local identity, and developing community spirit through interactive art.

Q: How do you get a bronze sculpture that weighs several hundred pounds transported from Texas to North Carolina and then into the ground? A: VERY CAREFULLY!

Enjoy this BTS timelapse taken over the course of several hours at the Charlie Sifford installation a few weeks ago.

The foundry drove the statue across many states in a trailer and our friends at Harmon Construction Services, LLC did a wonderful job getting the work of Emmanuel Gillespie safely in its permanent home! This representation wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Truist Championship

Dr. Sifford was the first African American golfer admitted into the PGA and he was born in Charlotte. We are grateful for the support that’s allowed us to keep this history maker’s memory alive in CLT and on the Trail of History!

The great debate of the 1890’s that you’ve probably never heard of: Bloomers.

Women’s fashion has always been controversial, but these radical hybrid skirt pants took it to a whole new level. One that tore families apart and sparked newspaper articles throughout the nation.

In an extreme case, a representative in Kansas introduced a bill to prohibit women from wearing bloomers! His reasoning that bicycle riding destroyed the health of women and made them unfit for motherhood. Apparently owning bloomers led to bicycle riding!

In another instance, a husband sought legal advice to find out if he could sue his wife to make her stop wearing bloomers.

Local physician and icon, Dr. Annie Alexander was asked for her opinion, which was printed in the Charlotte Observer in 1895.

While she said that women have a right to wear whatever they please, she also said that it wasn’t becoming for women to wear bloomers while they were “shopping or calling on a friend.” As a woman who specialized in treating women and children, she knew better than to believe that bicycle riding destroyed the health of women.

She made it clear that men have no right to tell women what to wear, but also went on to meticulously describe “a more suitable dress for bicycle riding, shopping, visiting or office work”. Which happened to be a wool skirt that reached the ankles.

You can visit the Dr. Annie Alexander sculpture on the Trail of History...where she is dressed in a wool skirt to her ankles:
