Powerful statement from IBEW Local 110:
Brothers and Sisters,
Over the past few months, the federal government has filled our streets and communities with thousands of masked federal agents with the stated goal of finding, detaining, and deporting violent criminals who reside in our communities without proper documentation.
However, their actions have been drastically different. These federal agents have shown up to
schools, day cares, and churches. They have dragged people from their cars, broken down doors, and taken people from their workplaces. Their actions have not been limited to undocumented individuals.
On multiple occasions, United States citizens have been the victims of such actions.
Oftentimes, these actions were taken without judicial warrants, a blatant violation of the Fourth
Amendment.
Citizens of the Twin Cities exercising their First Amendment right to assembly have been met
with chemical irritants, threats of violence, and as we all know, lethal force. The escalating
tensions have entered our streets, our job sites, and our places of worship.
These escalated tensions between federal agents and our communities culminated in the killing of Renee Nicole Good. We make no statement on the character of Renee Good; we did not know her. But she was a mother, a wife, and a United States citizen. She leaves behind an orphan, a widow, and a broken community. And, as with any loss of life, this is a tragedy, and no citizen should be shot in the street by their own government.
If our actions were to cause death we would, and should, be held accountable. We would, and
should, lose our licenses and careers. We must hold our government to the same standard we
hold ourselves. After all, our government is one that is of the people, by the people, for the
people.
Regardless of your stance on the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the federal government, their handling of the current situation sets a dangerous precedent that could very well be used against other groups, such as organized labor.
This is why we call for:
1. An immediate limitation of ICE activities to the ex*****on of judicial warrants.
2. The swift passage and enforcement of local city, county, and state laws to prevent federal
law enforcement from hiding their faces and identities.
3. A full stop to the escalating means and actions of the federal government (e.g.
warrantless stops and searches, the use of chemical means of crowd control, and the
assault of community members).
4. Full transparency in the investigation of the shooting of Renee Good, and forthcoming
communication of the same.
5. All stewards and union officials to enforce Article 3, Section 2(g)(iv) of the Inside
Construction Agreement to assure as far as possible that all jobs shall be performed with
maximum safety. We further call for safety to include freedom from unreasonable search
and seizure of our members.
In Solidarity,
Members of IBEW LU 110
