Our mission…

The Heineman-Robicsek Foundation strives to enhance healthcare in Latin America, by providing public hospitals with essential medical equipment, supplies, training, and pioneering medical research. Our commitment extends to educating healthcare providers on the latest advancements in medical technology, practices, and research to make a lasting impact and improve the lives of their underserved populations. Concurrently, we provide grant support for medical research to qualified applicants, including, but not limited to cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, cardiology, oncology, anesthesiology, translational, and transformative research.

Since 2011, clinicians from Atrium Health and Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City have worked side-by-side to advance cardiac care across Belize. Beyond building sustainable solutions, we’ve built deep friendships and lasting partnerships. This month, heart surgeons Dr. Eric Skipper and Dr. Adrian Coye led their teams together, saving lives and capturing a few moments of joy along the way!🫀

Our surgical team performed a lifesaving aortic valve replacement alongside the Belizean team this week. Thanks to our generous donors Edwards Lifesciences Belizean clinicians are gaining expertise & impacting lives. Team members & students from Barrel Project also toured the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to learn more about needed resources at the country’s only tertiary care center.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ernesto Moreno, an anesthesiologist at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), has arrived in Aswan, Egypt, to begin cardiac anesthesia training. It is an honor to partner with the Sir Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Foundation to help advance Dr. Moreno’s expertise. This training marks the first in a series of professional development opportunities for additional KHMH personnel.

Last week, we celebrated the opening of the Heineman-Robicsek Foundation Outreach Logistics Center, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of the Bissell family.

Because of their donation, this new warehouse will enable lifesaving medical equipment and supplies to reach hospitals and clinics that might otherwise go without.

For years, the Bissell family, based in Charlotte, NC, has stood alongside HRF to help bring hope, healing, and health to thousands in need in Central America. Their support has included the donation of four cardiac catheterization labs across four countries, a mobile medical clinic, and so much more.

Our heartfelt thanks to H.C. “Smoky” Bissell and his wife Margaret as well as James “JJ” Bissell and his wife Nicole for their unwavering commitment to furthering the mission of HRF.

Yesterday, the Heineman-Robicsek Foundation celebrated the opening of our new warehouse in North Carolina. This is an important step forward in expanding our ability to serve communities in Latin America.

We were honored to welcome Dr. Lucrecia Peinado, the First Lady of Guatemala, as part of this special occasion, underscoring the global impact of this milestone and our mission.

With increased space to store donations, medical supplies, and critical equipment, this facility strengthens our ability to deliver life-saving resources where they’re needed most.

As always, thanks to Atrium Health for the donations and Chiquita for providing the shipping containers that will help move pallets of critical supplies from our new warehouse to the countries we serve. And thanks to all our partners and supporters who make progress like this possible.
