Following a competitive search led by a committee of community and organizational leaders, we are excited to welcome Aj Calpo as Director of the Young Singers of Charlotte, the Charlotte Master Chorale’s new youth choir initiative!
The search committee consisted of Artistic Director Kenney Potter, Singer Representative to the Board Sarah Barton Thomas, singer Sarah Fink, and Mark Kemp, Minister of Worship Arts at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
“We were extremely impressed by the depth and the caliber of the applicants who expressed interest in the position,” the committee shared. “The strength of the candidate pool reflected the excitement for this new endeavor. Aj's passion for community building and his experience developing high school choral programs stood out and we look forward to his leadership.”
Aj brings a decade of experience as a music educator, a student-centered approach to choral teaching, and a deep commitment to building musical communities where young people can thrive.
A hallmark of Aj’s teaching is a daily ritual where students practice “thanking their neighbors” at the end of their time together, rooting the ensemble in his fundamental belief that building good people is just as important as building good musicians.
