🤟🏽✨ What Is Deaf Pride — Really?

Deaf Pride is NOT just “being okay” with hearing loss.

It’s a powerful celebration of culture, language, history, and identity.

In a world that often centers sound, Deaf Pride says:
🖐🏽 “We are whole exactly as we are.”

There are two very different perspectives:

🔎 The Medical Model sees deafness as something to fix.
🌎 The Cultural Model sees Deaf people as a linguistic minority with a rich language (ASL), community, and shared history.

Deaf Pride embraces the cultural model. It rejects pity. It rejects the idea that Deaf people need to be “normalized.” It affirms that Deaf identity is valuable, complete, and powerful.

At its core, Deaf Pride celebrates:

🤟🏽 American Sign Language (ASL) — a full, complex language
🏠 Community and connection
📖 History and resilience
✊🏽 Resistance to Audism
💛 Self-acceptance and mental wellness

Deaf Pride isn’t about exclusion. It’s about empowerment.
It’s about demanding respect, accessibility, and representation.

When we celebrate Deaf Pride, we celebrate human diversity.

🌈🤟 Happy Pride Month!

June is a time to celebrate love, identity, and authenticity 💙

Pride is about showing up as your full self—unapologetically. It’s about honoring the journeys, voices, and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, including the Deaf LGBTQ+ community who continue to create space, culture, and connection.

✨ Love is valid
✨ Identity is powerful
✨ Everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated

Let’s continue to uplift voices, create inclusive spaces, and support one another—not just this month, but always 🌈🤟

📚 Deaf History Spotlight: Laurent Clerc 🤟
Did you know that one of the most influential figures in Deaf education was a Deaf man from France?

Laurent Clerc — often called “The Apostle of the Deaf in America” — co-founded the first permanent school for the Deaf in North America in 1817.
Alongside Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Clerc helped establish the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut.

Clerc was a brilliant Deaf teacher who brought French Sign Language (LSF) to the United States, which blended with local signs and eventually evolved into American Sign Language (ASL) as we know it today.

His legacy continues to live on in every ASL class, Deaf school, and Deaf space across the country.

✨ A Deaf educator.
✨ A pioneer.
✨ A foundational figure in the history of ASL.

Let’s honor Laurent Clerc — a leader who shaped the future of Deaf education and empowered generations of Deaf students.

🧠🤟 ITP Student Mental Health Matters

If you’re in an Interpreter Training Program, you already know—this journey is rewarding and intense. Between classes, assignments, skill-building, and feedback, it can feel like a lot.

Here’s your reminder: you are allowed to be learning. You don’t have to be perfect. 💙

✨ Give yourself grace – Growth takes time
✨ Take breaks – Your brain needs rest to process language
✨ Ask for help – You’re not meant to figure it all out alone
✨ Find your people – Connect with classmates who understand
✨ Celebrate small wins – Progress is progress

Imposter syndrome, stress, and burnout are real—but they don’t define your ability or your future in this field.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or mentally drained—please seek professional support. You deserve care while you’re building your career.

You’re doing better than you think. Keep going 🤟💙

The need for sign language interpreters is growing — and the shortage is real 🤟🏽📈

From schools and hospitals to courtrooms, mental health services, and emergency response, qualified interpreters are essential for equal access. As awareness of Deaf rights and ADA compliance increases, so does the demand for skilled professionals.

But becoming an interpreter requires advanced ASL fluency, cultural competence, certification, mentorship, and long-term commitment. With limited Interpreter Training Programs and high burnout rates, the gap continues to widen.

This isn’t just about jobs — it’s about access, equity, and communication rights for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

👉 Read our full blog to understand why interpreter demand is rising and what can be done to strengthen the next generation of interpreting professionals. Find it through the link in our bio.

💬 Discussion question:
What do you think is the biggest barrier preventing more people from becoming qualified interpreters?
