The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board approved a diversity-driven approach to magnet schools, with Wednesday’s unanimous vote coming after more than a year’s study. Changes take effect with January’s lottery.

"Schools are the single largest lever of mobility in this country. When we commit to creating and enforcing laws that acknowledge the injustice of the past, we open up the possibility of using schools as a means of reducing inequality."

What underlay all the unrest in Charlotte? The segregation of once integrated public schools is a good place to start.

🎉It passed!🎉
Despite great debate surrounding the agenda item preceding it, the board of county commissioners approved a $33 million advance of funds to pay for land acquisition, design and preconstruction costs for 13 capital projects. Planned projects will add seats for students at existing schools and build new schools including 3 elementary, 2 K8s & a new high school. Adding capacity to reduce overcrowding is a HUGE win for our kids!

A piece of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools land that had been slated for sale to a townhouse developer will instead remain undeveloped, after Mecklenburg County commissioners voted to ask CMS not to sell the land – and agreed to buy it themselves if the school system doesn’t agree.

The Capital Request package is finalized. A $40 million advance will be provided to focus on buying land and design/pre-construction items for the 2017 bond list.

This evening the School Board will have their regular board meeting 6 p.m. - CMGC, Meeting Chamber. ONE Charlotte put in a lot of work to get to where we are today. Please continue to tweet, text, or call your board members and request them to vote "yes" to the capital request.
