The Charlotte Chapter of South Carolina State University National Alumni Association was started in 1965. Crawford, Professor at South Carolina State College and an officer in the Alumni Association, met with the group of about ten area Alumni about forming a chapter. They held monthly meeting at each other homes. Because of growth the Chapter had to move they're meeting to the Greenville Recreati
on Center. Presently our meeting place is at the McCrorey YMCA on Beatties Ford Road. From the very beginning, the Charlotte Chapter has been at the forefront in supporting the University. In the early years, though few in numbers, the Chapter supported the National Alumni initiatives and the University Scholarship Funds. The Charlotte Chapter has donated more than $50,000 in scholarship funds in its 48 year history. During the beginning the chapter held monthly meeting at each other homes. The Charlotte Chapter supports three scholarship funds at the University: The David B. Waymer Scholarship, Rev. Calvin Young Scholarship and the William M. Blakeney Scholarship. Since these Scholarship Funds were started in the late 80’s, the Chapter has helped ten deserving students from the Charlotte area attend South Carolina State University. From the ranks of the Chapter have come a National Alumni President, a National Secretary, a National Vice President, a National Chaplain and several National Committee Chairpersons. We also boast about having one of the oldest graduates, Rev. Calvin Young class of 1934. In the last ten years, the number of graduates moving into the Charlotte area has grown tremendously, but the goal remains- “We have to give back so that our brothers and sisters coming behind us will get the education they deserve.”
