Chatt Celebrates Black History Month: Highlighting people of Caribbean descent who have made a mark on Black History in the US.

Next up: Richard Benjamin Moore 🇧🇧

Richard B. Moore was a civil rights activist, community organizer and champion of Caribbean and African self-determination. He was born in Barbados in 1893 and migrated to Harlem after the death of his father. His family were some of the earliest blacks to settle in Harlem. The racism he experienced influenced his life of activism. He was a member of the Socialist Party and other organizations. He was well-known for his speeches on street corners and in lecture halls, where he combined elements of Black nationalism and Marxism.

In 1960 he wrote the book "The Name Negro: It's Origins and Evil Use" which argued against the terms "negro" and "colored". He opened the Frederick Book Center in Harlem, known for its rare texts on Black people.

Moore died in 1978 in his birthplace of Barbados.

They built a farm and prosperous trading post near the opening of the Chicago River and lived there until 1800. Point du Sable is known as the "Father of Chicago" and was recognized as of the founder of Chicago in 1968, as he was the first permanent non-indigineous settler in the area.
