Too many North Carolinians are hearing myths about their voting rights.

At we by fighting back with facts:�• You never lose your right to vote for a misdemeanor conviction—even in jail.�• You can vote while awaiting trial.�• If you have a felony conviction, you cannot vote until your full sentence—including parole or probation—is complete.�• Once your sentence is done, your rights are restored.
These laws were designed to silence Black voters. Today, Black North Carolinians make up 21% of the state’s voting-age population but 42% of those disenfranchised while on probation or parole. In 44 counties, the rate is 3x that of whites.

We’ll keep organizing until every community has equal access to the ballot.

Happy Labor Day from FICPFM! We celebrate hard work, perseverance, and care — and we stand with workers on strike for better wages and safer jobs. We also know directly impacted people do America’s work while facing discrimination: ~1 in 3 adults has a record, and unemployment for formerly incarcerated people is ~27%. We organize to end blanket bans and invest in housing, healthcare, and employment for all.

We know the violence of cages firsthand. These systems separate families, strip people of their humanity, and profit from suffering. History is repeating itself—and we refuse to allow it.

FICPFM and our network of directly impacted leaders have fought hard to close prisons because we know they don’t bring safety — they bring trauma.

But justice does not look like replacing one cage with another. Closing prisons only to expand ICE detention is unacceptable. We stand united with formerly incarcerated people, immigrants, Black, Brown, and marginalized communities to say: No new cages. Not for us, not for them, not for anyone.

Real safety comes from housing, healthcare, education, and dignity — never from barbed wire and prison walls.

Voter suppression isn’t a thing of the past — it’s happening right now. Across the country, new barriers are being put in place to block our communities from the ballot box. On top of that, federal requests for voter data from multiple states are raising serious concerns about privacy, intimidation, and targeting of directly impacted people.

At FICPFM, we know these efforts aren’t about protecting democracy — they’re about silencing us. They fear our power, our voices, and our votes. That’s why we’re fighting to restore rights and protect democracy for all.

Due process is not optional.

When prisons and jails hand people over to ICE without a judge’s review, they bypass the most basic protections of justice. These backdoor transfers disappear people into another abusive system—without warning, without rights.
