The 2026 College World Series Finals was supposed to be about baseball. For these two, it was about something else entirely.
Jaxon Willits had just become a dad. He stood in that dugout with his own father coaching beside him and his daughter in the stands. Three generations of a family, together in one place, at the biggest moment of his career. When his team dropped four straight conference series, he didn't talk about pressure. He talked about presence. "We just took it one pitch at a time. And when things weren't going our way, we just took it one pitch at a time."
Gavin Gallaher had been to Omaha before and came back knowing exactly what he didn't want to miss. The last time, it went by too fast to feel. This time he slowed down. He walked off that field after the loss and didn't talk about the score. He talked about the people. About a coaching staff that puts you as a person before they put you as a player. About a locker room he would go to battle for any day.
The scoreboard said Oklahoma won. But both of them reminded us that the game was never really the point.
