Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, honor resilience, and reflect on the ongoing work of creating a more equitable future.

Across Charlotte, Black-led nonprofits and community organizations are advancing opportunity, preserving culture, strengthening neighborhoods, and empowering future generations. Their leadership, innovation, and deep community connections help make our city stronger for everyone.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we also recognize the importance of investing in organizations and leaders who are creating lasting change in our community. Through collective giving and community support programs, we can help ensure these vital organizations and their leaders have the resources they need to thrive.

We're continuing our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series with our Environment Impact Grant recipient, Sustain Charlotte.

Sustain Charlotte was founded in 2010 to address the environmental, economic, and social challenges that area residents face due to decades of population growth and lack of investment in sustainable transportation (walking, bicycling, and public transit).

Sustain Charlotte is the Charlotte area's leading organization focused on overcoming systemic root causes of environmental injustices through advocacy for more equitable land use and transportation decisions. Many of Charlotte's environmental nonprofits, including many with whom they regularly partner, are addressing the specific environmental impacts of climate change in our city, including booming population growth and the infrastructure needs that accompany it.

The WIF Impact Grant will enable Sustain Charlotte to expand their work during a critical time. Mecklenburg County's rapidly growing population urgently needs smart and sustainable solutions to support a healthy environment and access to opportunity for all, yet recent changes in federal and state level policies have weakened environmental protections and severely reduced funding for sustainability efforts.

The gavel passes as we thank our 2024–2026 Board Chair Katie Susong and welcome our 2026–2028 Board Chair Angela Scholl! 👩‍⚖️

Both Katie and Angela have been dedicated leaders and champions of Women’s Impact Fund for more than a decade, helping shape our organization and strengthen our impact throughout the Charlotte community.

A member since 2014, Katie has served WIF in numerous leadership roles, including Finance Chair, Governance Committee member, and most recently Board Chair. Her thoughtful, hands-on leadership has helped guide WIF through a period of significant growth and evolution.

A member since 2016, Angela has served on the Board of Directors, chaired the Community Impact Committee, Grants Committee member, and contributed to several important initiatives across the organization. As we begin implementation of our new three-year strategic plan, we are excited for the vision and leadership she brings to the role of Board Chair.

Katie and Angela exemplify the spirit of Women’s Impact Fund through their service, commitment, and dedication to our mission. Please join us in thanking Katie and congratulating Angela!

Next up in our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series, we're highlighting our Education Impact Grant recipient, Right Moves for Youth.

RMFY’s mission is to help students in grades 6-12 make the most of their education, connections, and opportunities to set themselves up for future success. Their Small Group Mentoring program provides weekly, in-school, and virtual group mentoring services modeled after adolescent group counseling and focuses on the following pillars: education; social-emotional well-being; college and career readiness; and civic duty and personal leadership.

Using PowerSchool data from CMS, RMFY measures traditional educational outcomes such as school attendance, graduation/promotion, and suspension rates. They also measure social-emotional skills using a statistically-validated SEL screening tool. RMFY’s doctoral-level evaluation manager leads evaluation efforts and helps ensure impact and program fidelity. Evaluation informs RMFY leadership and staff of the program's success and identifies areas where we need to improve to meet the needs of students.

Right Moves For Youth currently serves 21 schools with additional schools on their wait list. The WIF Impact Grant will be able to support an entire school’s program for 1 school year, which is approximately 75 students receiving support services!

As we celebrate Pride Month, we’re reflecting on the importance of philanthropy that uplifts and includes all members of our community. At Women’s Impact Fund, we believe supporting marginalized communities—including the LGBTQ+ community—is essential to building a more equitable, connected, and thriving Charlotte for everyone.

We recently refreshed one of our blog posts from 2023 exploring the history, advocacy, and philanthropic impact of Charlotte’s LGBTQ+ community, along with the organizations and leaders helping create lasting change across our region.

Read the updated blog at the link below and join us in continuing the work of building a more diverse and inclusive Charlotte.

To begin our 2025-2026 Nonprofit Partner series, we're starting with our Arts + Culture Impact Grant Recipient: Arts For Life!

Arts For Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting pediatric patients and families through arts education and engagement. By providing educational art programs, they enrich patients’ lives, nurture their minds and spirits, and encourage positive healthcare experiences for children and their families.

Since 2015, AFL has partnered with Levine Children’s Hospital to serve thousands of patients across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. They transform hospital rooms and lobbies into vibrant studios, host impromptu dance parties and calming sing-alongs, and distribute approximately 4,000 Artivity® Kits annually—self-guided projects packed with supplies and ideas.

The WIF Impact Grant will sustain current operations and expand key initiatives:

- Accessibility Expansion Initiative (Phase Two): Enhancing program adaptability, delivery hours, and staff support to serve children of all abilities and medical needs.
- Behavioral Health Support: Creative sessions that promote emotional regulation and coping for children facing trauma, anxiety, or depression.
- Hematology-Oncology Open Studios: Themed art gatherings for immunocompromised patients.
- Scaling One-Offs: Transforming occasional events into ongoing, responsive programming.
