Charlotte Family Housing In its two-phase continuum of care model, Charlotte Family Housing (CFH) provides supportive transitional shelter and affordable housing for its families.

The mission of Charlotte Family Housing is to empower working families experiencing homelessness to achieve life-long self-sufficiency through shelter, housing, supportive services, and advocacy. During both phases, the families work closely with social workers to receive intensive family-focused care and support such as vocational counseling, financial literacy, and parenting skills. CFH empowers families to take positive steps in both phases to achieve financial independence and self-reliance. Our social worker to family ratio is 1 to 16 (compared to some government programs that may be as high as 1 to 50). By keeping our ratio low, CFH social workers work far more intensively with each family on their journey to self-sufficiency. We estimate families will take an average of two years to complete all of the structured steps outlined in our program to move to self-sufficiency. Ultimately, this time frame depends on the family's circumstances and how severe the generational poverty background.

Kinda chic to go back to school with a new backpack full of books & school supplies 📚✏️📓

We celebrated the back to school season at our annual Back-to-School Palooza this weekend. Students picked out books and backpacks while parents connected with resources to help prep for a healthy & happy new school year!

HUGE thank you to Ameriprise Financial for providing 350 new backpacks for our students! And to Mental Health America of Central Carolinas - MHA, THE FACTS Initiative, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, K C Puranda, and The Hope & Healing Collective for joining us to share about helpful resources and services.

Grow babies grow 🌱

It’s Earth Day & it’s National Volunteer Week!!! We’re so grateful for the amazing team of volunteers from who spent their day planting trees at our shelter.

In just a few years, these little trees will provide more shade & privacy so our families can enjoy relaxing outside! We can’t wait to watch them grow 💚

It’s National Social Work Month which means we get to celebrate the amazing, strong, & joy-filled team of social workers at CFH!

From home visits to goal-setting and budgeting to being a calm and trusted presence, our social workers meet families exactly where they are and provide a launch pad for their futures.

2️⃣0️⃣ years of Kelly!!!

“Everyone that walks through our doors has value and I believe in all of the families to make it through the program. If I can contribute a smile or a kind greeting to their day, I’ve helped play a small part in their success.”

Kelly started working as a Resident Assistant at Plaza Place family shelter before CFH even had its name! For the past two decades she’s been one of the first smiling faces families see when they walk through our doors.

Kelly, we are SO grateful for your light & for all you do to make Plaza Place the welcoming home that it is 💛

Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who showed up this year. You brought the joy and hope we needed & showed us and the families in our program how much this community cares.

So much of the work we do is only possible because of the hundreds of volunteers that selflessly give their time & talents. Whether you gave an hour or 100 hours, we see you and we’re so grateful.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭?💤

Last school year 5,680 CMS students experienced homelessness. For some kids that looks like unwanted sleepovers with family members or friends. For some, it means sleeping in the backseat of a car and getting to school early to brush their teeth before class. Some students spent the night in shelter beds across the city.

At Charlotte Family Housing, we want to see every kid have safety, care, and a place to grow up & dream.

Our hearts are still so so full from all the fun & magic of Home for the Holidays ♥️

Thank you to all the families who showed up to show us compassion in action! Together, you packed hundreds of snack bags, wrote holiday cards full of love and hope, contributed funds that will support so many families this year, and learned how to be better neighbors to everyone in our city.
