Sacred Utterances as Tools of Self-determination

Each sacred word we speak is an act of Kujichagulia. When we choose "Kuwa sasa" (being present) over distraction, or "Iwa pele" (gentle character) over hardness, we're wielding ancient tools of healing.

Our languages carry codes of AfRaKan kansciousness. "Sankofa" teaches us to reclaim our past. "Ashe" reminds us of our creative and Neter power. "Ma'at" guides us to truth and balance. Each utterance breaks another chain of colonial thinking. Each utterance can be a source of emotional healing and spiritual improvement.

In moments of doubt, speak "Nguvu zangu" (my strength). When seeking clarity, invoke "Ori" (Neter kansciousness). These aren't just translations - they're transformations. Our ancestors encoded healing frequencies in these sounds.

Through these sacred words, we practice self-determination. Each choice to speak our mother tongues is a choice to heal our emotional wounds. Each AfRaKan centered word ramembered is a piece of ourselves raclaimed.

Start today. Choose seven words from our AfRaKan languages. Utter the words throughout your day.

Instead of saying hola to your AfRaKan child or complementary partner, say "sawubona." Instead of saying thank you, say "medaase." When you want to express gratitude to someone, say "Nina shukrani nyingi."

Choose AfRaKan centered utterances, your ancestors' utterances, as your medicine. Allow them to guide your liberation and kujichagulia.

Amani na baraka! Abibifahodie! Habari gani?

Umoja: Healing Our Hearts, Healing Our Kammunities

The first principle of Kwanzaa emphasizes togetherness or unity.

What happens when our emotional wounds keep us apart?

Today, I invite you to explore umoja through the lens of emotional wholeness.

Many of us carry racialized trauma, familial trauma, anticipatory grief, traumatic grief, or disenfranchised grief that manifests as emotional pain, dysregulation, distrust, isolation, and diskannection from our families and kammunities.

These wounds create ripple effects beyond our individual psyche into our kammunal kansciousness.

When trauma-rooted pain goes unhealed, it manifests as:

1. Distrust in our organizations and institutions
2. Dysfunction in our families and kamplementary ralationships
3. Diskannection from and within our spiritual spaces
4. Destruction of our kallective healing potential

Yet healing individually catalyzes kallective transformation - as we process our pain, we develop deeper empathy, stronger boundaries, and authentic vulnerability.

This kazi ya ndani (inner work) creates the foundation for authentic unity, allowing us to build ralationships and kammunities rooted in Ma'at rather than trauma and isfet (chaos).

When one heals, many benefit - our watoto (children) inherit fewer emotional wounds, our kamplementary partnerships grow stronger, and our kallective spaces become sanctuaries of growth, healing, and improvement rather than cycles of harm.

Kansider how unresolved pain shows up in our spaces: The aunt who creates drama at family gatherings. The kammunity leader who castigates, shames, lacks Asafo leadership skills or the ability to delegate. The activist who burns out from carrying too much alone.

These aren't just character flaws—they're manifestations of emotional pain and dysregulated behavior, habits, and attitudes. They're cries for healing.

True Umoja raquires us to:
- Acknowledge our wounds without shame or judgment
- Create safe spaces for vulnerability, emotional safety, and trust-building
- Practice kallective care, not just individual self-care
- Honor our ancestors' resilience while raleasing inherited pain patterns
- Rakagnize that personal healing strengthens kammunity bonds
- Embrace our individual and kallective healing rasponsibilities

Your healing journey is a ravolutionary act of unity.

When you tend to your emotional and spiritual well-being, you become more available for authentic kannection.

Call to Action
Choose ONE ralationship that needs mending.

Before reaching out, spend 15 minutes in meditation or prayer, focusing on what umoja truly means to you. Then, take one small step toward rakannection—whether that's a text, a call, or simply holding that person in your heart with kampassion.

Ramember: Unity isn't about perfect harmony. It's about showing up whole, hurt parts and all, ready to grow, heal, improve, and build together.

Habari gani? Umoja!

The Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens is housed in a 1910 Renaissance-style mansion built by Italian winemaker Secundo Guasti, who collected art to display in the home. It was later bought by famous early Hollywood director Busby Berkeley — responsible for many Great Depression-era musicals — in 1937. Though it passed through several hands over the years, it was most recently purchased by the Peace Theological Seminary in 1974 and later became the headquarters of the Movement of Spiritual Awareness. In 2002, the labyrinth and gardens were added, and the estate opened to the public.

One of the most common behaviors seen in adults who were over-parented as children is a struggle with decision-making.

The reason behind this is pretty straightforward. Growing up with parents who made all the decisions, no matter how minor, deprives children of the chance to develop their own decision-making skills.

As adults, these individuals often find themselves in situations where they have to make choices – big or small. And when faced with these situations, they might feel overwhelmed or anxious.

Highly intelligent people are not afraid to admit when they don’t know something.

Contrary to what you might think, saying “I don’t know” doesn’t show ignorance. Instead, it shows honesty, humility, and a willingness to learn.

Smart people understand that they can’t know everything – and they’re okay with that.

Manipulators are crafty. They weave intricate webs of deception to get you to do what they want, often without you even realizing what’s happening.

The first step to not playing their psychological games is to understand these tactics. Knowledge truly is power in this case.

Manipulators often employ strategies such as guilt-tripping, playing the victim, or gaslighting – making you question your own perception of reality. It’s a psychological war of sorts, where the manipulator uses your emotions and mental state as their weapons.

Being present isn't about successfully showing up to work on time and getting through the day. It's about where your mind is living.

We all spend time in the future and the past. That's natural and healthy. But it should be a visit, not an extended stay.

In each task that you do, your mind should be right beside you. The meaning of being present is that your physical body and mind are focused on your job.
