We invite you to get ready to shape the conversation at the Charlotte Justice Conference using Open Space Technology!

We are so excited to practice this conversational technology with you to help us find the conversations that matter for the moment we are in.

Open Space Technology is like creating a cozy living room for meaningful conversations. Instead of traditional lectures all day long, we’re empowering YOU to drive discussions on issues that matter most.

Our speakers will help spark ideas and insights in their morning thoughts and then we will find the conversation that is animating life in us for the afternoon session.

We’ll be sharing more instructions and how the process will work at the conference.

Bring your voice and ideas to the table on April 27th! We have set aside time to come together, listen deeply, and learn from each other’s experiences.

Amy brings her passion for people power in making the community better. She founded BeLoved Asheville to be a place where people of all walks of life could come together to create powerful solutions to common struggles and a Western North Carolina and world where everyone thrives. She has spent three decades working on the ground building intersectional community, creating mutual aid networks and creating social change. Recently, she passed the NASCLA licensing exam and obtained her general contractors license to support BeLoved’s affordable housing efforts. Amy loves being mom to twin 10 year olds, Myla and Eleecia. She loves the color purple, playing guitar, making art, and studying movement history.

Ponkho, Co-Director at BeLoved Asheville, is a strong activist and indigenous/Latinx community organizer who is brilliant at innovation and is also BeLoved’s media expert. He loves supporting the community in expressing cultural pride, honoring ancestors, and teaching our youth their cultural roots. He loves photography, art, music, and creativity and he uses these gifts to celebrate culture and work for racial equity and social justice. He has been instrumental in BeLoved’s rapid response to ICE raids, flooding, and the COVID-19 pandemic; the BeLoved Village of deeply affordable homes with equity, Asheville en Espanol, and our first in the nation homeless/formerly homeless street medic team.

Meet the Rev. Brandon Wrencher - a minister, organizer, writer, and trainer. He works across faith, education, and non-profit sectors at the intersections of decolonizing church, contemplative activism, and local presence to build beloved communities. Brandon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from UNC-Chapel Hill, a Master of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary, and completed post-graduate studies in theology and ethics from Duke Divinity School. He is currently a senior community organizer with Carolina Federation and founder of Good Neighbor Movement.

Pastor Anthony Smith, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, joined the US Navy right after high school, dedicating himself to service. Now living in Salisbury, NC, with his spouse Toni Smith, they established Mission House, an outreach mission where Anthony continues his devoted service. Pastor Smith actively advocates for racial and economic justice, contributing to reconciliation and healing in the Salisbury-Rowan community. Notably, he played a key role in relocating a Confederate monument in downtown Salisbury peacefully. As an author, poet, and faith-rooted organizer, Anthony’s leadership extends to various community initiatives, including his role as an elected member of the Salisbury City Council.

We are excited to introduce some of the incredible speakers joining us at the Charlotte Justice Conference!

Each generously bring perspectives that are rooted in cultivating healing relationships across our sibling cities of Greensboro, Salisbury, and Asheville.

They’ll be in conversation with the manifesto and our community as we cross pollinate ideas and stories that emerge in the space.

Our invitation is that you come with presence, openness, and curiosity.

Get ready to be inspired by voices advocating for positive change in our community. Our hope is that these conversations create connections and spark relationships, collaboration, and imagination.

Stay tuned for speaker spotlights and bios!

How do you describe that which is felt and lived in and through the body?

How would you describe Charlotte? What are it’s gifts and curses?

growing. changing. dichotomous. diversity. arts + culture. our smallness and adaptability. trapped in myths of progress and growth. lack of affordable housing. economic segregation.

We offer these as entry points and invite you to continue to add voice and shape to how Charlotte is experienced.

From grounding sessions to exploring our manifesto on justice in Charlotte, we’re diving deep into meaningful conversations. Be inspired by our lineup of speakers responding to “Dear Charlotte,” engage in Open Space Technology discussions, and join interactive Fishbowl Response sessions. Reflect on our discussions and receive a heartfelt benediction as we depart.

Don’t miss out on post-CJC events like the Kinship Plot gathering at Warehouse 242!

We hope this convening is a catalyst to continuing the conversation and healing actions beyond the conference walls.

See you this Saturday @ 10am April 27th

To anchor the conference this year we wanted to do a pulse check of the city…

The Charlotte Manifesto, a powerful reflection of our city’s essence, challenges, and aspirations, is here.

Crafted in collaboration with community members across Charlotte, this manifesto is inspired by our shared experiences. As siblings in our common humanity and as organizers anchored in the body of Christ which knows the burden of colonization and occupation, we unite to share truths and seek wisdom.

It sets the stage for the upcoming Dear Charlotte conference, where themes of justice, community engagement, and collective action will take center stage. More than words, it’s a call to action, an invitation to dialogue, and a pledge for change.

Join us as we breathe life into our manifesto at the conference. Together, we’ll engage in collaborative discussions, paving the way for a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible Charlotte.
