My pregnancy was a roller coaster from the start. When my husband and I heard a heartbeat, we were so excited. Our 2-year-old, Ella, would be a big sister! During one of our visits, I was told there were 2 heartbeats – identical twins! However, I received even more shocking news - we were having Mono-Mono twins – meaning they were in the same sac and shared the same placenta. I now faced an extremely high-risk pregnancy. I was admitted to the hospital at 26 weeks and had an emergency c-section on June 2, 2010. It was the worst day of my life. Katelynn was stillborn, and Scotlynn was in the fight of her life. Scottie was just 2 lbs when she was born – so tiny and helpless. She had to be resuscitated and needed two blood transfusions. All the while, I was trying to wrap my head around the fact that Kate didn’t make it. It was absolutely overwhelming and almost suffocating, but the support and love from my family, friends, and the staff at Levine Children’s Hospital sustained us. We are so blessed Scottie refused to give up and is now home with us, happy and healthy. The events of that year are not ones you can ever “get over.” But, with the strength of my family and good friends, we are making it through. As the months have passed, we’ve decided to do something charitable in honor of our children and the experience we had at Levine Children’s Hospital. We included the names “Cottie & Cake” in our event name in
honor of Scotlynn and Katelynn. Big sister, Ella, had a difficult time saying “Scottie and Kate” but her attempts at pronouncing her sisters’ names inspired the “Cottie & Cake” title. Having spent 10 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery at Levine Children’s Hospital, we quickly learned what a special place it is for children and families in our community. We had the most amazing nurses
and physicians who offered hope and smiles to families in their darkest hours. This year, we are kicking off “In the Nic of Time,” a new annual event to raise funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery and research. We hope you’ll join us as we honor the life of a very special little girl, pay tribute to
the fantastic team and services at Levine Children’s Hospital, and raise funds to provide hope for families in the future. The Hampton Family
