Trips for Kids Charlotte is a nonprofit that provides mountain bike rides - as well as the opportunity to Earn-A-Bike - for children ages 10 to 15 from Charlotte's fragile neighborhoods. The organization uses mountain biking and related activities to teach youngsters lessons in personal responsibility, self-empowerment, achievement, environmental awareness, physical fitness and community service. The Earn-A-Bike program is at the organization's Re-Cyclery in NoDa (corner of 15th and N. Davidson streets), where the public may also donate "dusty but not rusty" bikes or buy a refurbished bike. Proceeds from the Re-Cyclery help fund the overall program.

Our mood because Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is NEXT WEEKEND! Next Saturday, October 3rd, bring the kids and get ready to hit the trails at Colonel Francis Beatty Park!

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is a free, beginner-friendly event for kids ages 9–16, with guided rides, activities and plenty of opportunities to get comfortable on the trails.

Last weekend, more than 50 kids got the chance to learn to ride at Clanton Park! 

This Learn to Ride event was made possible through a partnership with Mecklenburg County partners and Bicycle Sport, bringing together people and resources to create a day where kids could build confidence and experience the joy of riding a bike.

And the impact doesn’t stop when the event ends. With help from Partners for Parks, the public traffic garden at Clanton Park was painted and refreshed for kids to use long after the event. It’s now a space where young riders can keep practicing and learning the rules of the road.

For some kids, the day ended with a bike of their very own, too. Several bikes given out at the event were built by our volunteers at a past community bike build, with bikes provided by Wells Fargo. 

It truly takes a village to create such an impact, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make this day happen! Stay tuned for more information on the next Learn to Ride happening in November.

Last week, we learned that a lot of you love a tandem. So this week, we’re bringing you an even more special Bike Feature Friday.
